Take your diaries: Yellowjackets finally arrives on CANAL+ and myCANAL from March 3. From its triumph in the US to its 100% female cast, including Stephen King’s enthusiasm for season 1: 5 facts about a series that hits the mark!
WHAT DOES IT TALK ABOUT ?
After their plane crashes, high school girls from a football team struggle to survive in a wilderness in the North of the United States. Twenty-five years later, the survivors have rebuilt themselves…well, almost.
Because a question keeps coming back, what happened during the nineteen months that their ordeal lasted? And how long will their pact never reveal anything still hold?
A TRIUMPH IN THE US
Before landing in France on March 3 on myCANAL and CANAL+, Yellowjackets created the event across the Atlantic during its broadcast on Showtime in the fall of 2021. Bringing together no less than 5 million viewers in front of their screens each week, the series quickly proudly imposed itself on the throne of the biggest television hits.
It even became the channel’s second-biggest hit, closely following the audiences of Dexter: New Blood, a production that benefits from a solid community. In addition to the dizzying figures, Yellowjackets has above all succeeded in haunting the minds of the public by making them want to develop a thousand theories which have abounded on social networks. Let the French be warned!
STEPHEN KING FAN
Skilfully combining horror with psychological drama, thriller with initiatory narrative, supernatural with romance, Yellowjackets had everything to catch the eye of fans of the genre. And the most famous of the latter did not hesitate to point it out! In January, it was none other than Stephen King who split a tweet to share his excitement about the series.
“Yellowjackets is a damn good survival story, a damn good mystery story, and has its fair share of terrifying moments. What it also has – unlike many other current series – is a sharp construction of its characters and a biting sense of humor.”, wrote the master of horror on the social network. If the King says so…
THE CULT NOVEL BEHIND THE SERIES
Taking its title from the term for predatory wasps known for their aggressiveness, Yellowjackets is a loose adaptation of the literary classic Her Majesty of the Flies. Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the 10 episodes of the first season indeed open on the crash of a plane. If the victims are high school girls on a football team, unlike William Golding’s post-war novel which described a group of English children stranded on an island, survival is indeed central to the plot.
The heroines will indeed have to think of a new organization while waiting for help, reshuffling the cards of priorities and making them brave all the limits. Another difference with the book, Yellowjackets opens a 2nd temporality, 25 years after the facts, allowing to see the impact of this drama on their life and how this one will finally catch up with them.
WOMEN, WOMEN, WOMEN
Directed by Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body), the series is carried by a high-flying and 100% female cast. From Melanie Lynskey (Don’t Look Up) to Juliette Lewis (Born Killers), Tawny Cypress (Heroes) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers), not forgetting the presence of Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow): the power belongs to the actresses in Yellowjackets which paints fascinating portraits of women.
We meet both a journalist in search of truth and a housewife who refused to follow her path, an LGBT politician aspiring to high office than a strange former teenager who has become a threatening adult, an independent punk with several addictions including those of firearms… In short, women who do not lack bite and who are all likely to pique your curiosity!
