Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi film Independence Day airs tonight on TMC. The sequel was released in our cinemas, 20 years later. Is a third opus possible?
In this science fiction film carried by Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, a huge flying saucer invades the earth’s sky, releasing an infinite number of smaller saucers which take position above the largest cities of the world. A New York computer scientist deciphers the signals emanating from the strange travellers. They are not friendly at all and these aliens are preparing to attack Earth.
20 years after this first part, Roland Emmerich released the sequel entitled Independence Day: Resurgence. Driven by young people Liam Hemsworth, Jessie T Usher and Maika Monroethis second opus saw the return of Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch.
On the other hand, Will Smith, the headliner of the first film, is not part of the cast of Resurgence. The actor would have asked for a salary of 50 million dollars, refused by Fox. The actor later explained his absence by a problem of schedule since the filming of The Suicide Squad took place at the same time.
The feature film with a substantial budget of 165 million dollars, only grossed 389 million dollars at the international box office and suffered a number of bad reviews, some even calling it dwarfs.
Is a third component now possible?
Announced just before the theatrical release of Resurgence, the third installment of Independence Day was finally canceled by Fox. The poor results of this opus precipitated the decision of the producer of the franchise Dean Devlin who declared in 2018 not planning a third film. Roland Emmerich himself explained that the absence of Will Smith had ruined Resurgence, and that he would have done better to stop the sequel project when the star withdrew.
But with the takeover of Fox by Disney in March 2019, the director’s hopes are revived. In 2020, Emmerich told the site Screen Rant that he had a script for a third episode in the back of his mind, stating “I actually have a great idea for a sequel“.
The following year, Roland Emmerich announced to the site ComickBook want to expand the universe of the saga. “Now that Disney has a streaming service, they need content. I would love to do a third movie, or a TV series, to continue the story. When we made Independence Day: Resurgence, we already had an idea for a third chapter, more related to the first..”
He added: “I’m really passionate about this movie. (…) Stargate: The Stargate and Independence Day are fundamental films for me. They created almost everything I did after that.“
For its part, the streaming platform has not announced anything about a potential sequel to Independence Day.
Note that whatever happens, Captain Steven Hiller, the character played by Will Smith, will not return since he is supposed to be dead.
Roland Emmerich’s latest feature film, moonfallin which the moon threatens to crash into the Earth, has been in theaters since February 9.
