Virgin Media has confirmed that a network problem has left many customers in London without Internet access.

In a statement, the company said, “We are working as quickly as possible to restore services and apologize to those affected.”

Thousands of customers have reported problems on the Down Detector website and have complained about social media.

Virgin Media said the problem only affects broadband customers in some areas of London.

Clapham, Ealing, Putney and Stanmore’s clients are among those who complain on Twitter, and many say that they cannot work from home without their connection.

Virgin Media encountered a similar problem in April, when its network was unavailable in parts of London for several hours.

“At a time when people rely in particular on home broadband to work and keep in touch with friends and family, connectivity problems will be frustrating for thousands of Virgin Media customers,” said Ernest Doku from the comparison website Uswitch broadband.

How to set up a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot

If you have an “unlimited data” telephony plan, you can configure a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot to connect your computer to the Internet via your smartphone.

On Android

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen twice and tap settings icon
  2. Tap Network and internet
  3. Tap Hotspots and tethering
  4. Tap Wifi hotspot
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to assign a name to your hotspot, assign it a password and activate it

Remember: the data used by the devices connected to your hotspot will be included in the monthly mobile data allowance, as set by your mobile network. Setting up a mobile hotspot is not recommended if you have a limited monthly data limit.

On iOS

  1. On the home screen, touch the settings icon
  2. Tap Personal hotspot
  3. Switch on Allow others to join to activate your hotspot

The on-screen instructions will tell you the name of the Wi-Fi hotspot.

Remember: the data used by the devices connected to your hotspot will be included in the monthly mobile data allowance, as set by your mobile network. Setting up a mobile hotspot is not recommended if you have a limited monthly data limit.
