“Dune”, “Last Night in Soho”, “The Last Duel”, the French in competition, the tribute to Jamie Lee Curtis … Discover the selection of the 78th Venice Film Festival, which will take place from September 1 to 11.
No sooner has the Cannes Film Festival ended than Venice is already shaping up. And like every year, the cinema re-entry should be massive and spectacular on the Lido, between the Competition, the Out-of-Competition and the parallel sections. Including Orizzonti, which will see Isabelle Huppert and Reda Kateb with the film Les Promesses.
From September 1 to 11, 67 feature films will be screened. And a series: the adaptation of Scenes from married life by the creator of In Analysis, with Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac. The actor will also be one of the major stars of this 78th Mostra, as also expected in The Card Counter by Paul Schrader (Competition) and, of course, Dune by Denis Villeneuve. Already confirmed a few weeks ago, the new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel will be one of the events of the festival.
But Dune will not be alone, because it will also be necessary to count on The Last Duel by Ridley Scott (with Adam Driver, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jodie Comer), Last Night in Soho by Edgar Wright or Halloween Kills by David Gordon Green. On this occasion, Jamie Lee Curtis will be honored for the lifetime of a career that she started as “scream queen” in front of John Carpenter’s camera, in the first installment of the horrific saga.
On the French side, Yvan Attal will present his new production, Les Choses humaine (out of competition), while there will be three to compete for the prestigious Lion d’Or: Audrey Diwan with L’Évenement, Stéphane Brizé with Un autre monde (a again worn by Vincent Lindon) and Xavier Giannoli with Lost Illusions. Or the ambitious adaptation of “The Human Comedy” de Balzac, in which Benjamin Voisin, Gérard Depardieu, Cécile de France and Vincent Lacoste, among others, respond to each other.
Three films that will try to seduce the jury chaired by Bong Joon-ho, and in which we will notably find Virginie Efira and Chloé Zhao, Lion d’Or in 2020 with the Oscar winner Nomadland. But the competition will be increased since the competition will include a few big names such as Madres Paralelas by Pedro Almodovar, The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion, The Hand of God by Paolo Sorrentino or even Spencer by Pablo Larrain, in which Kristen Stewart plays Lady Di.
