28 years after the disaster film “Twister”, its sequel will see the light of day. Scheduled in our theaters in July 2024, Twisters will be an original story and should not be linked to the previous opus. Here's everything we know about this disaster film.

Get ready for the tornado of the century! 28 years after Twister, Jan de Bont's disaster film will have a sequel.

Announced in 2020, the project was to be directed by Joseph Kosinski, director of Top Gun: Maverick, but the latter ultimately left the adventure to direct a Formula 1 film with Brad Pitt. It is therefore Lee Isaac Chung, nominated for the Oscar for Best Director for Minari, who will direct Twisters. The $200 million feature film is written by Mark L. Smith, co-writer of The Revenant.

Released in our cinemas in 1996, Twister is led by Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton. The latter play a couple of tornado chasers. With their team of meteorologists, adventurers and daredevils, they tirelessly travel the roads of the Midwest with the goal of observing tornadoes. Written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, the film was a great success with $495 million at the international box office.

What is Twisters about?

Twisters should not be a reboot, prequel, or sequel to Twister, nor should it bring back old characters. The studio describes the feature film as “a new chapter” that will tell the adventures of a new group of tornado chasers.

With the topic of climate change and weather conditions becoming more and more relevant, Twisters should be anchored in the news.

In October 2022, Deadline announced that the film would center on the daughter of the heroes of the first part, Jo and Bill Harding, then played by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The latter would in turn have become a tornado chaser.

But, last December, the American actor Glen Powell, seen in Top Gun: Maverick and announced in the casting of Twisters, declared on the microphone of Vogue that Twisters will have an original story and will not be linked to the first film.

It will be a single-player story set in the modern world.

“It definitely won't be a reboot. We're not trying to do the same story as in the first one. It will be completely original. There won't be any characters from the first film in this one, so it won't be strictly speaking a sequel. It will be a single-player story set in the modern world.”

The actor then adds that the film puts into practice advice given to him by Tom Cruise on the set of Maverick.

Glen Powett in Top Gun 2

“He told me, 'If you want to make big films, you have to understand what connects his story to the world, and what makes it universal.' “Twisters ticks that box, since men battling the weather is something universal. The film shows that humans are helpless in the face of such cataclysmic forces.”

Who will be the heroes of Twisters?

British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones was chosen to play the heroine of this feature film. Revealed to the general public thanks to the Irish mini-series Normal People in which she played opposite Paul Mescal, future hero of Gladiator 2, Daisy Edgar-Jones then appeared in the series War of the Worlds adapted from the HG Wells classic, the horror comedy Fresh and the adaptation of the best-seller Where the Crayfish Sing.

In Twisters, Daisy Edgar-Jones will play a former storm chaser who, after surviving a deadly tornado, now works an office job. But the latter will be forced to return to her first loves.

She will be surrounded by Glen Powell, very popular actor in Hollywood since his performance in Top Gun: Maverick, by Anthony Ramos, recently in the casting of Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, by Kiernan Shipka, the Sabrina of the Netflix series, by David Corenswet, future Superman of the new DCU, by Sasha Lane discovered in American Honey, by Katy O'Brian (The Mandalorian) or even by Maura Tierney, currently showing in Iron Claw. We still don't know what roles these actors will play.

Will Helen Hunt return?

If, in 2022, rumors circulated about a possible return ofHelen Hunt subsequently, Glen Powell's statement suggests that the actress will not appear in Twisters. Especially since the latter would not be on good terms with the studio.

In April 2023, Variety revealed that Helen Hunt and Daveed Diggs, both stars of the Blindspotting series, were working on the script for a Twister sequel that Hunt was to direct, but the studio rejected the idea.

The actress declares: “I tried to do it. Daveed [Diggs]Rafael [Casal] and I wrote a script where the storm chasers were black, but they didn't want to produce it. I had planned to direct the film but we barely managed to get a meeting. In a time where there is finally talk of diversity, this would have been really good. Plus, I planned to launch rockets into the tornado. It was going to be really cool.

A film visually different from the previous one

Jan de Bontthe director of the 1996 film, told Inverse not having been consulted for Twisters.

According to him, this feature film will be completely different from his film, especially since visual effects technology has evolved a lot in 28 years.

He declares : “Back then, when things fell from the sky, they were real things falling from a helicopter. When we were filming a car escaping a tornado in a hail storm, it was real ice that fell on us. This is a film that cannot be remade…. It will never happen again.”.

Twistersfilming of which ended last December, is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2024.
