Twilight – Chapter 1: Fascination is broadcast tonight on W9. Back on the success of the film adapted from the novel by Stephenie Meyer and carried by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
Released in January 2009 on our screens, Twilight – Chapter 1: Fascination is the first part of a series of 5 films adapted from the novels of Stephenie Meyer. The vampiric saga carried by Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner succeeded Harry Potter (whose last opus was released on our screens in 2011) and totaled more than $ 3 billion at the world box office.
A dream success …
It was in 2003 that Stephenie Meyer began writing his imaginary literary saga after a dream. The latter specifies that in her dream, a human and a vampire loved each other, but the thirst caused by the human’s blood made their life impossible. Meyer writes the first book of the saga in 3 months and signs a contract for 3 additional books with Little, Brown and Company for an amount of 750,000 dollars. Aimed at young adults, the first novel was released in 2005 and sold more than 18 million copies in 35 countries … Then followed three other books: Tentation (2006), Hesitation (2007) and Révélation (2008) ).
In 2008, the American economic magazine Forbes, which establishes the list of the most powerful personalities in the world every year, placed Stephenie Meyer in 26th place in the celebrities category. The Time Magazine for her part ranked the novelist at the 49th position on the list of the hundred most influential people. In 2011, the Mormon author’s literary saga sold over 120 million copies.
The idea of adapting these novels to the cinema quickly germinated in the minds of the studios. Paramount therefore bought the rights to it in 2004. The first adaptation was very different from the novel and the writing of the screenplay seemed to stagnate for 3 years. Summit Entertainment then bought the rights and Melissa Rosenberg wrote a faithful adaptation of the novel by Stephenie Meyer. Filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the dramas Thirteen and The Lords of Dogtown, is chosen to direct the film. The castings can then begin. The literary phenomenon is such that even before the film’s release, more than 350 fan sites are listed.
5000 actors auditioned for the role of Edward
Many actresses including Jennifer Lawrence, Lily Collins or Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy) audition for the role of Bella Swan, but Kristen Stewart is quickly chosen. It was Emile Hirsch, whom Catherine Hardwicke had edited in The Lords of Dogtown, who recommended her. The two actors had just filmed together in Into the wild.
More than 5000 actors are auditioned for the role of the vampire in love Edward Cullen. The British comedian Robert Pattinson, who played Cédric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, was finally selected. The shooting lasts 44 days and ends on May 2, 2008.
The first release date announced for Twilight – Chapter 1: Fascination is December 12, 2008, three weeks after the planned release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. But Warner changes the date of Harry Potter, which goes from November 21, 2008 to July 17, 2009. Summit advances its Twilight and takes the place left vacant by the wizard.
A rich idea since from the 1st weekend of exploitation in the United States the film recorded 69.6 million dollars in revenue. In total, the film brings in $ 407 million at the international box office (and more than 2 million viewers in France). It is nevertheless the smallest result for a film in the franchise. The best score recorded was that of the last Twilight component – Chapter 5: Revelation Part 2: $ 830 million in global revenue.
Twilight – Chapter 1: Fascination received 5 awards at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards: Best Film, Best Actress Performance for Kristen Stewart, Male Revelation of the Year for Robert Pattinson, Best Kiss and Best Fight.
