While the 2021 season of the great gastronomic competition begins this evening on M6, a look back at 10 movie characters who would have their place in the brigades of Philippe Etchebest, Hélène Darroze, Paul Pairet or Michel Sarran.
“Everybody can cook.” Mixed with his exceptional talent and his great culinary sensitivity, the motto that makes Rémy’s heart beat also sums up his exemplary career. As food critic Anton Ego said of him, “It is difficult to imagine a more modest origin than that of the genius who now officiates at Gusteau, and who is in our eyes nothing less than the greatest cook in Paris.” Rémy’s virtuosity is therefore coupled with unfailing tenacity: a quality that is likely to be appreciated in Philippe Etchebest’s team.
JULIE AND JULIA
The traditional inspiration of the famous Julia Child (Meryl Streep) in the 50s, the respectful originality of the blogger Julie Powell (Amy Adams) in 2009 … These two great cooks, armed with their 524 recipes, are not in danger of lacking inspiration or technique when it comes to facing the trials of Stéphane Rotenberg. Their level of requirement, their passion and their daring could earn them a place of choice in the brigade of Hélène Darroze or that of Michel Sarran.
BABETTE (BABETTE’S FEAST)
In the midst of a period that one could unfortunately qualify as “austere” from many points of view, the abundance and culinary vitality simmering in the pot of Babette Hersant (Stéphane Audran) can only help us. good. Former chef of the Café Anglais in Paris, she is able to perform dishes as demanding and sophisticated as Demidoff blinis, giant turtle soup or quail in sarcophagus. His generosity and his know-how should quickly attract the favors of a Michel Sarran or a Hélène Darroze.
MONSIEUR SEPTIME AND HIS TEAM (THE GRAND RESTAURANT)
Whether he is the director of a famous gastronomic guide in L’Aile ou la cuisse, a traditional broth preparer in La Soupe aux choux, an entrecote hunter in Le Gendarme in New York or the owner of a prestigious establishment in Le Grand restaurant, Louis de Funès has often made cooking and comedy rhyme. But isn’t his impatience and legendary bad humor likely to earn him a few raised eyebrows in the face of the Top Chef jury?
VINNIE (THE FREEDOMS)
On condition that he does not put “not too many onions in the sauce” and Paulie takes care of chopping the garlic so fine that it will melt in the pan, the cordon bleu of the Goodfellas should be able to seduce the taste buds of chefs without any difficulty, by intoxicating them with traditional Italian flavors. Once his prison sentence has been served, we can easily imagine Vinnie coming to cook with joy and good humor on the Top Chef set.
FLINT LOCKWOOD (GIANT BALLS STORM)
On condition of knowing how to control his precious machine and correctly manage the proportions of his recipes, this inventor capable of transforming water into food can become the scientific backing of this new season. His profile, ideal in the event of a molecular gastronomy test, is likely to interest chef Paul Pairet who is particularly fond of experimental cuisine. It remains for Flint Lockwood to perfect himself in the subtle and delicate art of training: a very demanding discipline, especially when the food falls directly on your head.
CARL CASPER (#CHEF)
While this year, the legendary event of the “restaurant war” will be placed under the sign of “click and collect”, Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) and his magnificent food-truck are right on the theme! Having worked as a chef in a renowned Californian restaurant, this daring entrepreneur converted into a mobile cook will inevitably be able to combine know-how and innovation, by focusing on sound values. Who said you can’t rhyme “gastronomy” with “taco” or “panini”?
WILLY WONKA (CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY)
Often considered as the pet peeves of the candidates, the pastry tests will inevitably be a piece of cake for this master chocolate maker. Indeed, if it is undoubtedly a little difficult to imagine Willy Wonka cutting an entrecote or cooking a lobster, we know him capable of true miracles when it comes to playing with sugar. If he managed to make a cascade of melted chocolate flow in his factory, he should be able to reserve some nice surprises for the Top Chef jury.
MANNEKENPIX THE BELGIAN (THE 12 WORKS OF Asterix)
Nicknamed the cook of the Titans in The 12 labors of Asterix, this friendly cook is known to always satisfy his customers when it comes to quantity, even when they have an ogre appetite. Poultry by the dozen, roasted wild boars, schools of fish, stuffed camel and even elephant with olives … This year, if Mannekenpix ever joins the competition, we hope that the brigade leaders will have their stomachs in their heels … and that ‘Obelix will not have eaten everything already.
HORTENSE LABORIE (THE FLAVORS OF THE PALACE)
After having cooked for several years for the President of the Republic in the kitchens of the Elysées, will Hortense Laborie (Catherine Frot) be able to please the taste buds of the four brigade chefs? Her exemplary mastery of French cuisine and her formidable technique will undoubtedly make her one of the most dangerous candidates of the season.
