Whether in movies, series or cartoons, there are plenty of bad main characters. They’re not bad actors or even bad characters, they just don’t deserve to take up so much space. If your only quality is to have a bunch of friends funnier than you, leave your place to someone else, my friend.
1. Ted Mosby in How I Met Your Mother
Ted is a guy who likes to complain and it must be said that he does it well. He’s an average guy who falls in love every three days and pisses people off by correcting their mistakes orally. We could be friends with Ted, sure, but his life wouldn’t be at all interesting without his friends. Especially Barney.
2. Woody the cowboy in Toy Story
Like Ted, Woody is the loyal guy who protects his buddies but can’t stop complaining. All the time. He is afraid of everything, likes his boring little daily life and does not hesitate to be racist when a space ranger comes to seek asylum in his home.
3. Leonard Hofstadter in The Big Bang Theory
Here then, another main character who looks like all the others. Leonard has no personality, he only lives to complain about Sheldon when he is unable to go a day without him and loves to frown for no reason. Fortunately, Sheldon Cooper exists to save this series.
4. Manny in Ice Age
Manny is a lonely mammoth. We forgive him for being so grumpy because he lost his whole family and an insufferable lazy man is following him, but it’s still hard to accept that he is the main character of the movies by being so uninteresting.
5. Clay Jensen in 13 Reasons why
Besides complaining like the other characters, Clay spends his time whining. Hannah didn’t kill herself so we could hear you moaning and mumbling for 4 seasons Clay, it’s just unbearable. His only quality is loyalty; it’s very beautiful but it’s not enough to make a good series.
6. Malcolm in Malcolm
Speaking of whining, we have a world champion here. Unlike the other boring main characters, Malcolm at least has the excuse of being a little genius. Poor thing, he’s way too smart to be happy so he complains to the camera 36 times an episode. If the show was about Dewey, we’d all be a lot happier today.
7. Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead
How is it imaginable to have chosen Rick as the main character when Daryl and Michonne exist? Already, the guy is a cop (not fun). On top of that, he always wants to order when he has no relevant idea and in the end, he lets his son die stupidly. Well done Rick.
8. Bran Stark in Game of Thrones
There are hundreds of characters in Game of Thrones, some are very secondary and others are on screen. From the first season, we understand that the character of Bran is going to be boring to death because we don’t understand anything about this delirium of Corneille (it is perhaps better explained in the books, who knows). Despite all the boring passages where we see him talking to himself, he remains one of the most important characters in the story. Bad.
9. Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl
If you don’t know who Nate Archibald is, he’s a rich, handsome guy. That’s all. Nothing interesting ever happens to him but who knows why, he is ALWAYS there (when we would have preferred to see more Georgina the plague instead).
10. Simba in The Lion King
At the beginning of the film, we note that Simba is a brat but there is potential to make him an interesting character, just like his friend Nala. And then, the guy decides to flee the Land of Lions to spend his entire adolescence smoking joints with his hippie friends. We want to know what is happening at home and what Nala is going to do, but no, a temporal ellipsis decides to move on to the next chapter. Frankly, Nala should have been the main character in The Lion King.
11. Charlie Bucket in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
We understood that Charlie’s family was poor and kind. They have a leaning roof, eat soup every day and divide a chocolate bar into seven when it’s not even equal parts. The problem is that Charlie is just nice and poor, he has no other character traits. It could have been more fun if one of the brats, Violette Beauregard or Mike Teavee for example, was the main character in the film.
12. Amélie Poulain in The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain
Amélie has the merit of being an original character, she is far from resembling the first characters in this top. The problem is that she is too nice and frankly, it gets a little on the nerves.
13. Jake Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Jake Perlata is far from being the worst character in this top, he’s even one of the best. He is funny, irresponsible, intelligent and never short of ideas but unfortunately for him, he is easily outdone. We all know that the best character in this series, the one who should be the main character, is Gina Linetti.
14. Paul Atreides in Dune
The new adaptation of dune by Denis Villeneuve is very well done and Timothée Chalamet is very good in his role as Paul. The problem is that the character is not that interesting. We sincerely hope that Chani will be the main character of the second film because hey, it’s Zendaya what…
15. Harry Potter in All Harry Potter
Do it all again with Hermione at the center of the story. Or even Neville if you want.
