Life as an actor is not easy, especially when it comes to getting a good role it can quickly become hell. We accept commercials, crappy TV movies, badly paid shootings and extra roles hoping to make a name for ourselves and shoot with the greatest but reality catches up with us and one morning we are forced to become a model for royalty-free photos found on cigarette packets. That’s also why sometimes actors accept roles for strange reasons or worse, lose roles for strange reasons. Even in Hollywood some actors auditioned for a role they really wanted and gave it their all but ended up getting another one.
1. Tom Felton could have played Harry Potter and Ron Weasley
The kid had some nerve, with his little blond head he wanted to play Harry Potter the little dark-haired man with glasses or Ron the redhead, well no, he got the role of Draco Malfoy which suited better with his little bastard head.
2. Chadwick Boseman wanted to play Drax in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’
The gentleman had auditioned to play the role of Drax which Dave Bautista finally won, but he was able to comfort himself by donning the costume of Black Panther, the main character of his own film which marked the MCU.
3. Rainn Wilson wanted the role of Michael Scott in “The office”
And it would have been a real bullshit because on the one hand we wouldn’t have had Steve Carrel’s Michael Scott but on top of that someone other than him would have played Dwight Shrute and that was clearly not possible. Watch The Office.
4. Heath Ledger was set to play Bruce Wayne
He was offered the part but it didn’t happen, and eventually he came back in the second film to play the Joker. He would probably have excelled in the other role but that we will never know, a bit like the ideal cooking time for coq au vin.
5. Tom Hiddleston wanted the role of Thor
He even appears in the list of actors who screwed up an audition and suddenly he was given the role of Loki, which ultimately suits him very well since he is one of the best characters in the MCU.
6. Stephanie Beatriz wanted another role in “Brooklyn 99”
In reality the actress had auditioned for the role of Amy Santiago but it was made clear to her that she had better come back for that of Rosa, and she finally got it and everyone was so happy, we had a great party with olive cake to mark the occasion.
7. Carice Van Houten was to play Cersei
It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Lena Headley playing Cersei Lannister today, but there must have been casting calls, and Carice Van Houten tried her luck before finally getting the role of the enigmatic Melisandre and her weird necklace that prevents her from being an old lady (nothing captured in this plot).
8. Drew Barrymore was to play Sydney in Scream
We told you in the stuff you probably don’t know about Scream, but the actress refused the role and preferred to take that of Casey Becker because she thought it was cooler to die directly in the intro. Class to have so little melon.
9. Cillian Murphy was to play Batman
Like Heath Ledger, Cillian Murphy auditioned to play Batman and eventually landed the role of a villain. Well, his Scarecrow was less memorable than Ledger’s Joker, but it was good enough.
10. Orlando Bloom wanted to play Faramir in “The Lord of the Rings”
Yes at the base the young handsome kid didn’t want to play an Elf but a human and finally he had his place in the community, which is pretty cool (even if the role of Faramir smashes everything). He probably regretted the thing since the costume was a torture on set because of his eye contact lenses.
11. Courteney Cox rehearsed to play Rachel
Another thing you didn’t know about Friends, originally the actress had prepared her audition to play Rachel and it wasn’t quite what we expected from the character. Well, in the end, we gave her the role of Monica, which is just as important, so that’s fine. Do you also find that it’s overrated as a Friends series? Insult me if you disagree.
12. Jeremy Strong auditioned for the role of Roman in “Succession”
But you’re starting to suspect that since we’re at point 12 of this top he didn’t get the role, it was Kiernan Culkin who pulled the rug out from under his nose (yeah I know that’s not the right expression, stop being so severe). Instead, since he had made a good impression of it, the creators decided to spin him the role of Kendall.
13. James Caan was to play Michael Corleone in “The Godfather”
The studio absolutely wanted James Caan in the role while Coppola had Al Pacino in mind and didn’t want to change his mind. He offered to give Caan the role of Michael’s brother, Sonny, and eventually the producers relented. This is called a good choice in the jargon.
14. Norman Reedus was to play Daryl’s brother in “Walking Dead”
He originally auditioned for the role of Merle Dixon and the role of Daryl didn’t even exist. But the creators were so blown away by his performance that they created the character of Daryl just to have him on the show, probably the best idea they had before totally ruining this show.
15. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger were each set to play the other Brother Grimm
When they auditioned for the Terry Gilliam movie they both prepared the role they didn’t get, instead we flipped the characters deciding to keep them anyway since it was good actors and the film is what it is. Something not phew.
