In France, there are two categories of people who like to watch films and series: those who want to ban VF and those who prefer to watch films in VF. Even if it’s always nice to see content in its original version, it’s a bit stupid to spit on the VF when we have super talented dubbing actors in France. In addition, there are plenty of series where the VF is really better than the VO, it is said.
1. My family first
In France, My family first is a cult series from the 2000s and it continues to be broadcast every year on TV in a French version. On the contrary, the series was not a success at all in the United States and most Americans do not even know about it. Why is that ? Largely thanks to the quality of the dubbing and especially that of the father, Michael Kyle, provided by the talented voice actor Stéphane Ronchewski who also lends his voice to the Joker in the film The Dark Knight by Nolan. Michael Kyle’s actor, Damon Wayans, even confided in an interview with Daily that he loved the VF of his character when he does not understand French.
2. The Simpsons
The Simpsons is a worldwide cult series and it has been dubbed into 26 different languages. In the VO, the voices of Marge and Homer are much lower than in the VF, which sticks less to the personality of the characters. The French voices of all the members of the family are provided by very talented voice actors and this is what makes the series so pleasant to listen to.
3. South Park
Everyone can recognize the unbearable voice of Cartman in the French version of South Park and it is thanks to the actor Christophe Lemoine who doubles the character. In the VO, it is Trey Parker who gives her voice and although she is also very successful, she is not as cult.
4. Dr. House
When we have always watched Dr House in VO, it is hard to imagine rewatching the series in VF and yet, we are missing out on something. Hugh Laurie is voiced by Féodor Atkine and his voice perfectly suits the character of Gregory House, the most sarcastic and misanthropic doctor on the small screen. Féodor Atkine is also the one who gives his voice to Jafar in Aladdin, one of the best Disney films.
Even though Malcolm’s original version is great, the French dubs make the series amazing. The quiet little voice of Dewey, the annoyed and unbearable voice of Malcolm and the voices of the parents are perfect but it is really that of Reese, voiced by Donald Reignoux (who is also the voice of Titeuf) which is the best of all.
6. SpongeBob SquarePants
All the French-speaking children have watched SpongeBob SquarePants in French and it’s always strange to discover the original dubbing. It’s a very personal opinion but I find Bob’s original voice totally unbearable and that’s why it’s impossible for me to watch this series in original version.
I’ve never watched this series in my life and I’m probably missing something amazing. What is certain is that many people watched the series in VF when it was on TV and found that frankly, it went pretty well.
8. Desperate Housewives
Even if the original version of Desperate Housewives is very good, we have all already watched episodes in French on M6 and it must be said that Eva Longoria’s VF is absolutely exceptional. Besides, I suggest that the actress make an effort to adopt this voice on a daily basis.
The French version of Mentalist is less stunning than that of Dr House but it remains very successful. It is in particular the voices of Patrick Jane and Wayne Rigsby provided by Thierry Ragueneau and Thibaut Belfodil that we love to hear.
I was told it was obvious but I didn’t understand why.
French dubbing is one of the best in the world, why deny it with so much contempt?
