Broadcast in prime time on TF1 this Sunday, Thor: Ragnarok will soon be entitled to a sequel entitled Thor: Love and Thunder. We take stock of this fourth adventure of the God of Thunder.
WHO IS BEHIND THE CAMERA?
While Thor episodes weren’t the most beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Ragnarok’s 2017 release was a game-changer. With a more comical tone than its predecessors, the feature film conquered the press and the public.
No wonder then that the Maison des Idées proposed to the director of the latter, Taika Waititi, to re-stack for a sequel. What the New Zealander has accepted! He was also responsible for writing the screenplay, along with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
WHO IS PLAYING IN?
Thor: Love and Thunder will obviously be the main star Chris Hemsworth in the skin of Odin’s son and the latter will once again be well surrounded. Many familiar faces from MCU fans will be present, including the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Dave Bautista (Drax), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Vin Diesel (Groot) all responded favorably to Taika Waititi’s call. Tessa Thompson, whose character as Valkyrie was introduced in Ragnarok, will also be there, as will Jamie Alexander (Sif), who has not been seen on the big screen since Thor: The Dark World.
Another big comeback is planned in this fourth chapter: that of Natalie Portman. A big surprise when we know that the interpreter of Jane Foster had announced a few years ago to be done with the MCU. It is the presence of Taika Waititi in the realization that would have, it seems, convinced the actress to return.
The filmmaker will also resume his role of rocky Korg which he interprets in motion capture. A character who will always be accompanied by his friend, the giant insect Miek.
Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth who played Asgardian comedians who played Loki, Odin and Thor respectively in Ragnarok will also appear in this new opus. Also with Melissa McCarthy recruited to play a fake Hela.
Finally, two Oscar-winning actors have joined the cast: Christian Bale as the feature film’s main antagonist, Gorr the Slayer of Gods, and Russell Crowe as the king of Olympus, Zeus.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?
If the plot of Thor: Love and Thunder is mostly kept secret, we know that it will be in part based on the arc of the comics titled The Mighty Thor and written by Jason Aaron in which Jane Foster suffers from cancer and gets powers similar to those of the God of Thunder.
It was also confirmed that Valkyrie, who became the new ruler of Asgard at the end of Avengers: Endgame, would be looking for a… queen! Kevin Feige thus promised that the bisexuality of the character would be addressed in the film.
The conclusion of The Last Avengers also showed Thor going on an adventure with Star-Lord’s team, even renaming their group the Asgardians of the Galaxy. Love and Thunder should therefore, at least initially, address this new dynamic.
However, we do not yet know how Gorr (who, in the comics, is a powerful alien thousands of years old who masters various forms of combat and possesses superhuman physical abilities thanks to his weapon of choice, the Necrolame) and Zeus will be attached to the story.
Side tone, Taika Waititi assured that the film would be “different” and “crazier”Than Ragnarok, promising“many more emotions” and “much more love”. What to arouse even more the curiosity of the fans!
WHEN DOES IT COME OUT?
The MCU’s 29th feature film, Thor: Love and Thunder will land in French theaters on May 4, 2022.
