Robert Downey Jr. will be one of the main characters in the HBO series “The Sympathiser”, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2016 fiction “The Sympathiser”.
The novel The Sympathizer, Pulitzer Prize for Fiction 2016, will be adapted for series by HBO. It is Robert Downey Jr. who will produce the show, of which he will also play one of the main roles. South Korean director Park Chan-wook (already working on the mini-series The Little Drummer Girl) and Canadian screenwriter Don McKellar will be the showrunners.
Written by Vietnamese-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer is told from the point of view of a North Vietnamese spy, charged with infiltrating enemy troops during the Vietnam War; from Saigon in 1975 to Los Angeles in the 1980s, the novel retraces part of the history of the twentieth century.
If he will not be the main protagonist, “RDJ” will play several secondary roles supposed to represent the different faces of theestablishment American. Roles of antagonists therefore, which will contrast with the image of the Marvel superhero he played during the previous decade in the Iron Man and Avengers films.
