The suicide squad: superman could have been the villain of james gunn's film

Before confronting his squad with Starro, the giant starfish, James Gunn had another idea in mind for the big bad of “The Suicide Squad”: Superman.

After Batman, in Zack Snyder’s 2016 film, Superman almost faced Harley Quinn on the big screen. And Bloodsport. And Peacemaker. And King Shark. And Rick Flag. In short, the native of Krypton could have been the big bad of The Suicide Squad.

While he had refused, on several occasions, to stage the adventures of Superman on behalf of Warner, James Gunn however considered that Clark Kent appear in front of his army of anti-heroes. But he changed his mind because of the vagueness that already surrounded Henry Cavill’s future in the DC universe: “At the time, there were several questions like ‘Who is Superman in the DCEU [DC Extended Universe, ndlr] ? Is this film outside of the DCEU? ‘”, explains the director to Filmstarts. “And I didn’t want to have to deal with it all.”

James Gunn therefore fell back on Starro, the giant starfish (who is none other than the first opponent of the Justice League in comic books). But he does suggest that the Superman option was just a vague idea for a narrative in which the characters “should have stopped [le super-héros] for a reason… Because the situation would have escalated or he would have been controlled by someone. And so this lousy bunch of villains should have taken on the world’s most powerful superhero. “

INSPIRED BY FRANK MILLER?

Is this why most of the action takes place on the (fictional) island of Corto Maltese? In the third volume of “The Dark Knight Returns” by Frank Miller, published in 1986, this place in South America is shaken by clashes between rebels supported by the USSR and the local government, behind which line the United States, which sends Superman to pacify the area. And the comic book could thus have served as inspiration for James Gunn.

But maybe it’s just a postponement. Asked by CNA Lifestyle, the director is not against opposing the Suicide Squad to the Justice League. On paper : “I would have to think about it. I haven’t thought of a Suicide Squad vs Justice League movie, but that’s not a bad idea. But I would have to figure out who first. [compose] Justice League because I have no idea. “

“I’m here at DC, and people ask me ‘Is Henry Cavill still Superman?’ But I don’t know who Superman is, so who knows. “ There is therefore absolutely nothing concrete for the moment, and it does not say that this project is born. But, in the meantime, it is on consoles that the confrontation will take place in 2022, thanks to the video game “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”, where it will notably be a question of tracking down … Superman.
