The countdown begins ! The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will land on Amazon Prime on September 2. In the meantime, here is some reading if you want to familiarize yourself with what awaits you, refresh your memory or simply dive back into the rich and fantastic universe created by JRR Tolkien.

And of course, the entire Lord of the Rings is a must. It’s the book that started it all, a dense and intense work that every fan should read, if they haven’t already. Of The Fellowship of the Ring (1954) to Return of the King (1955), via The Two Towers (1954), find the 3 chapters in a single paperback. 1600 pages of adventure and magic retracing the epic and harrowing quest of Frodo, Sam and the rest of the Fellowship of the Ring, from the possession of the precious object by a young hobbit to the formation of a united mythical group to destroy the evil jewel and who wants to find him. It doesn’t get any more epic.

But, we remind you, the story of the Rings of Power takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, 7 thousand years before the events told in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The following book is therefore perfect for becoming familiar with this period, since The Silmarillion is a collection of stories that focuses on the genesis and early Ages of Middle-earth. Signed Tolkien, the work was however edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher, in 1977, with the help of fantasy author Guy Gavriel Kay.

Considered the “zero volume” of the history of Middle-earth, the complete Unfinished Tales and Legends of Tolkien is also essential. A collection of varied texts, it sheds crucial light on the world of the two works mentioned above. We find there, for example, the story of Celeborn and Galadriel or even the expedition of Erebor, accompanied by numerous texts which come to enrich the universe imagined by Tolkien and which can only enlighten you as to the series to come.

Finally, The book of lost tales consists, meanwhile, of 2 books that form the first 2 volumes of the history of Middle-earth. Here you will find the first texts of the Ancient Days story – written between 1915 and 1925 – before they finally took the name of Silmarillion. Here, it is the First Age which is told through the story of the sailor Eriol who, arriving on the island of Tol Eressëa, meets Gnomes who tell him about this age of Middle-earth – which is not called still so at the time Tolkien writes.
