Currently airing in the United States, season 4 of “The Resident” was marked by the departure of Shaunette Renée Wilson. Will her character, Mina, be replaced by a new doctor in the sequel to the medical series?
Warning, this article contains spoilers for season 4 of The Resident. If you don’t want to know anything before the broadcast in France on Warner TV and TF1, don’t read on!
Season 4 of The Resident, currently airing in the United States on Fox but still unseen in France, surprised everyone last week by saying goodbye to one of its main characters, Mina Okafor, who, because of a problem with her visa, ended up returning to live in Nigeria, where she is from.
A departure wanted by the actress Shaunette Renée Wilson, who had expressed the wish to leave the series after 4 seasons, but which leaves a great void within the Chastain hospital, so much Mina had become more and more central in the various intrigues over time.
However, according to the statements of executive producer Andrew Chapman at the microphone of TVLine, the writers have no intention for the moment to introduce a new doctor to fill the absence of Mina.
While season 4, which only has 14 episodes, will end in a few weeks, the production prefers to focus on the existing characters. And will therefore take the opportunity to give a more important place to two new members of the cast, Jessica Lucas (Gotham) and Anuja Joshi, who joined The Resident this year in the roles of Billie Sutton and Leela Devi.
Billie, who made her first appearance in Episode 6 of Season 4, is a friend of Nic (Emily VanCamp) who, after being fired several years ago for serious misconduct, returns to the Chastain Memorial team and finds some people who have not necessarily forgiven him for his past mistakes.
As for Leela, introduced in episode 8, it is about a new intern who comes to swell the ranks of the hospital and could well end up getting closer to Devon (Manish Dayal).
“Since we knew early enough that Mina was going to leave, we made it our business to look for new characters that are not replacements but rather additions to the cast that bring new elements to the series.”, explains Andrew Chapman, thus confirming half-word that, if no replacement strictly speaking will be introduced in the next episodes, Billie and Leela have been imagined by the writers in anticipation of the departure of Shaunette Renée Wilson.
“Billie’s complicated past will get more and more complicated in the next few episodes”, continues the producer of The Resident. “We have the feeling that this character is a ‘star in the making’ and a very important addition to the series. (…) And Leela represents what the series basically tells us, that is to say how we becomes a doctor and how we can be fooled by the system “.
“These two characters are going to get big storylines for the rest of the season. And, let’s touch wood, if we’re renewed for a fifth season, they’ll have big storylines in season 5 as well.”.
French fans of The Resident will however have to wait a little longer before discovering Billie and Leela – and being able to witness the departure of Mina – since TF1 is currently broadcasting season 3. And season 4 should not arrive at the moment. Antenna of the One before next year.
