THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
The context : In order to allow Frodo and Sam to join the Mountain of Destiny to throw the Unique Ring there at the end of the Return of the King, Aragorn and the last army of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth throw themselves into the mouth of the wolf. At the gates of Mordor, surrounded by thousands of Orcs, they are determined to put all the forces into the battle.
The speech : Hold your positions! Son of Gondor and Rohan, my brothers, I read in your eyes the same fear that could seize my heart. A day may come when the courage of Men will fail, where we will abandon our friends and break all ties. But that day has not arrived. It will be the hour of wolves and smashed shields, when the age of men collapses. But that day has not arrived ! Today we will fight! For all that is dear to you, on this good Earth, I order you to stand, Men of the West!
The context : Rocky Balboa has aged. He now runs a small Italian restaurant, but he hasn’t lost anything of his fighting spirit or his frankness. When he has the opportunity to tell his four truths to his son Robert, now distant and bitter, he transforms his accounting into a real lesson in life, in one of the most moving scenes of the Rocky saga.
The speech : I’ll tell you something you already know: the sun, the rainbows, it’s not the world. There are real storms, heavy trials. As big and strong as you are, life will bring you to your knees, and will leave you like that permanently if you let it go. You, me, anyone, no one hits as hard as life. It’s not being a good hitter that counts. The important thing is to be hit and still go ahead. It’s being able to cash without ever, never faltering. This is how we win.
The context : The general Maximus Decimus Meridius is a fine strategist and the Roman army is the most powerful in the world, certainly. But the hordes of German barbarians who are stationed in the opposing camp do not seem to want to joke. Evidenced by the return of the Roman scout, who had to report while driving on his own head. To ward off their fear, in the introductory scene of Gladiator, Maximus then shares a few words with his men before leading them into battle.
The speech : In 3 weeks, I will harvest my land. Imagine where you would like to be. And you will be there. Hold the line, stay with me! If you find yourself alone, riding in green pastures with the sun on your face, do not be disturbed. Because you are on the Champs-Élysées, and you are already dead. But what you do in your life resonates in eternity.
The context : Colonel Quaritch and his Marines are preparing to invade Pandora, determined to shave off the smallest grove that would prevent them from getting their hands on their precious ore. To preserve their planet, the Na’vi then decided to unite all their tribes and fight their common enemy, under the impetus of Jake Sully and his vibrant speech, which will launch the final act of Avatar.
The speech : Those from heaven sent us a message. They say they can take whatever they want, and no one can stop them. Well we will send them a message. Ride as fast as the wind can carry you. You will tell the other clans to join us. You will tell them that Toruk Makto is counting on them. Fly now with me! My brothers ! My sisters ! And we will show everyone who comes from heaven that they cannot take whatever they want, and that this world is our land.
The context : Former fighter pilot, President of the United States Thomas Whitmore decides to carry out the last air assault against the aliens who threaten to destroy humanity in Independence Day. But before joining the cockpit of his F-18, he intends to boost the morale of his troops with a good old battle speech!
The speech : Hello. In less than an hour, our planes will join others from around the world. You are going to deliver the greatest aerial combat in the history of Humanity. Humanity. A word that should take on new meaning for us today. Let’s no longer spend our time thinking only of our small unimportant quarrels. We will be united in our common interest. Perhaps fate wanted it to be July 4 today. You will again have to defend our freedom. Not tyranny, oppression, persecution. But frustration. We fight for our right to live, to exist. And if we win, July 4 will no longer be known as American National Day, but as the day when the world declared with one voice: we will not go into the night without fighting. We do not want to disappear without fighting. We are going to live. We will survive. Today we celebrate our independence day.
The context : In Stirling, the Scottish rebels are only a handful against the English armies who intend to quell their revolt with a few swords. Lower in number and technically under-equipped, the heroes of Braveheart nevertheless hold a weapon that no opposing soldier can boast of possessing: the courage, the ardor, the thirst for freedom that the words of William Wallace have just instilled in them.
The speech : Worthy sons of Scotland, I am William Wallace. (…) And what do I see? A whole army of my compatriots gathered in defiance of tyranny. It is as free men that you have come to fight. As free men you are. But how do you keep your freedom? We have to fight ! (…) Fight and maybe die. Flee, and you will live. Some time, at least. And one day on your death beds, many years will have passed. Perhaps you will regret not being able to trade all your sad lives saved in Stirling for a chance, just a small chance to be able to come back here and kill our enemies. Because they can take our life, but they will never take away our freedom!
THE SPEECH OF A KING
The context : Despite a serious speech problem, King George VI will have to let his voice resonate live, on the radio, and before all the British people, for the time of a historic speech. The one who must allow his country to rise up against Hitler and against Nazi Germany, a speech which he will finally manage to declaim without stuttering or stammering, with an unshakable authority devoid of the slightest hesitation.
The speech : Here we are forcibly immersed in this conflict, because we are bound to stand against a principle, which if it were to prevail, would be fatal to any civilized order in the world. Such a principle, stripped of its artifices, is surely the expression of this primitive doctrine which says that force takes precedence over law. In the name of all that we cherish, it is inconceivable that we refuse to take up this challenge. It is for this supreme purpose that I now invite my people of England and my people overseas to espouse our cause. I ask them to remain calm, firm and united in the ordeal. The task will be tough. Dark days await us, and war can no longer be limited to the battlefield alone. But we can only act well according to our idea of Good, and, with deference, in the name of our cause, appeal to God. If we all stay steadfastly loyal to this cause, then with God’s help we will win.
