Iris Bry made her debut in Les Gardiennes by Xavier Beauvois, which airs tonight. How did this woman that nothing predestined in the cinema land on a set? Answer below!
Released in December 2017, Les Gardiennes takes place in 1915, in the farm of Paridier. The women took over from the men who had gone to the front.
Working tirelessly, their life is punctuated between hard work and the return of men on leave. Hortense, the dean, hires a young girl from the public assistance to help them. Francine believes she has finally found a family …
FROM A BEP LIBRARY TO CINEMA, THE IRIS BRY REVELATION
Nathalie Baye and Laura Smet are the headliners of the feature film by Xavier Beauvois, director of the poignant Des Hommes et des Dieux.
However, it was Iris Bry who stole the show with a remarkable performance. The actress, completely unknown to the public, had never set foot on a movie set before landing the role of Francine in a rather improbable way.
Xavier Beauvois had castings with strangers and beginners. He wanted someone to authentically camp a peasant woman from the 1910s.
“I didn’t want a mannered little actress with a tattoo on her forearm”, specifies the director. It is by chance that the casting director, Karen Hottois, meets Iris Bry at the exit of a bookstore.
Seduced by his presence, she calls out to him and asks him if she wants to come and take tests. “It happened within seconds: a little earlier, a little later, the meeting would never have taken place, and Iris, this miracle, would never have made a movie!”, remembers Beauvois.
Iris Bry then finds herself propelled into the world of the 7th art, sharing the poster with Nathalie Baye and Laura Smet!
The young woman was 23 at the time and was taking a BEP Bookstore. She quickly convinced Xavier Beauvois during his casting.
“For the tests, she was asked to interpret the scene where she says that she is determined to keep her child, that this one will bear her name, that he will protect her… Barely twelve seconds since I was already dumbfounded. I called Sylvie Pialat [la productrice]. She immediately agreed with me “, says the director.
THE NEW ISABELLE HUPPERT?
Xavier Beauvois and producer Sylvie Pialat are full of praise for Iris Bry, who they believe has everything to become the new Isabelle Huppert.
“What’s funny is that when we took the plowing, harrow, horse, etc. lessons with Nathalie Baye and Laura Smet, Nathalie told us:” I can’t have lunch with you, I have a appointment. You just have to go there, it’s very good ”.
We listen to it and there, boom, we come across Huppert! Iris was able to speak with her for a while. In the same day, she met Baye and Huppert! “I’m living a dream! “(Laughs)”, relates the filmmaker.
IRIS CONTINUES ITS ASCENSION
After meeting Isabelle Huppert during her first filming experience, Iris gets the opportunity to give her the answer! In 2019, she played Hortense, Huppert’s daughter in La Daronne by Jean-Paul Salomé, a consecration for the actress.
Two years later, Iris Bry reunite with Xavier Beauvois for Albatros, with Jérémie Rénier. The latter encamped Laurent, a brigade commander of the gendarmerie of Etretat. He plans to marry Marie, his partner, mother of his daughter nicknamed Poulette.
He loves his job despite a daily confrontation with social misery. While trying to save a farmer who threatens to commit suicide, he kills him. His life will then change. The drama will hit theaters on August 25th.
