What is it about ?

When an unidentified woman is found brutally murdered, Detective Molly McGee teams up with fellow police officer Alex O’Connell, with whom she shares a tragic past, to solve the crime.

The Gloaming, a series created by Vicki Madden.

Between police and fantasy

From its first minutes, The Gloaming transports the viewer into a dark and threatening universe. Two young teenagers, Jenny and Alex, are victims, in 1999, of an attack while they are about to visit a strange building. Twenty years later, Detective Molly McGee discovers a body encircled in barbed wire at the foot of a waterfall. As the team tries to find clues, they come across a high school card in the name of Jenny, the young woman who disappeared two decades ago.

This is how the series’ nerve-wracking plot begins, halfway between pure thriller and True Detective and drama with fantastic elements. The Gloaming, the first of 8 episodes of which is available on Disney + Star – the others will be released every Friday -, brings together all the well-known codes of the police investigation.

Emma Booth plays the heroine of “The Gloaming”.

There is the tortured detective, caught up in her work, the small town that holds secrets and its inhabitants who all make perfect suspects. However, the program manages to offer something new, starting with its decor. Located in Tasmania, the fiction allows to discover the landscapes of this island located in the south-east of Australia and seldom shown on the screen.

The mix of genres is also one of the great qualities of the program. Sect? Black magic ? Parallel world or time travel? The mystery remains about the threat that hangs over the characters and The Gloaming shines with its sense of suspense during its episodes.

On the casting side, Emma Booth – appeared in Once Upon A Time and the excellent Love Hunters – lends her features to the main heroine and Martin Henderson – star of the series Virgin River and the film The Ring – plays a man from business targeted by the detective. They are surrounded by Rena Owen (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Ewen Leslie (Top of the Lake) and Aaron Pedersen (Jack Irish).
