The first post-credits scene from new Marvel movie The Eternals introduces two new Thanos-related characters, one of whom is played by a music star. What should we understand from this sequence? Be careful, spoilers.
Be careful, spoilers. It is advisable to have seen The Eternals before continuing to read this article.
Twenty-sixth Marvel Cinematic Universe film, The Eternals tells the epic story of this ancient alien race who lived in hiding for 7,000 years on Earth in order to protect humanity, without intervening in their conflicts, against the Deviants. While these cosmic beings thought they had accomplished their task and wisely waited to return home, the threat of the Emergence and return of the Deviants will force these superheroes to come together again to save Earth.
This new Marvel feature film, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao, introduces new characters to the MCU, who will play roles in Phase IV, right through to the post-credits scenes. In one of them, we find the Eternals remaining, after a final heartbreaking battle, aboard their ship Domo, when two characters appear: Pip the Troll and Eros, alias Starfox.
After a small number, Pip announces with fanfare Eros to the Eternals circumspect, Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Thena (Angelina Jolie) and Druig (Barry Keoghan). Eros berates Pip, saying that he doesn’t have to do the same for his arrival. After introducing himself and complimenting Thena on her legendary charm, Eros aka Starfox warns the Eternals that their friends, Sersi (Gemma Chan) notably, are in great danger, but he and Pip know where to find them. Indeed, at the end of the film, the Celestial Arishem kidnapped the other Eternals.
Two Thanos-Related Characters Introduced
Pip is the former prince of Laxidazia, turned adventurer, introduced in Strange Tales (vol.1) # 179 in 1975 by Jim Starlin in the comics. Pip the Troll is known to be a staunch companion of Warlock involved in a great fight against Thanos with the Infinity Watch, which included Gamorra and Drax. He was the holder of the Space Stone for a time, which earned him great powers. While he was ever a part of Thanos’ service against Galactus, Pip soon returned to Warlock and once aided Eros, during a trial.
Eros is simply the brother of Thanos, the Mad Titan who gave the Avengers a hard time until the final denouement in Endgame. Eros, aka Starfox, first appeared in comics in Iron Man # 55 in 1973, is a Titan Eternal, like his brother, and is less powerful than the Earth Eternals. But this does not prevent him from having many powers, in particular of persuasion and control of emotions, which makes him a great seducer, often very problematic.
Starfox was a part of the Avengers and aided them, as well as Captain Mar-vell, against Thanos before returning to a life of adventures until he was captured, tortured and then freed by his brother, then holder of the Glove of Infinity and its Gems. After months of rumors, the post-credits scene confirms that Eros is indeed embodied by Harry Styles, famous singer who had made his first acting steps in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.
If in the comics Pip and Eros do not strictly speaking have adventures together, it is not illogical to have them reunited in this post-credits scene since the two characters are great hedonists. This duo, linked to Thanos, makes an interesting link between the plot of the Eternals, ultimately quite autonomous from the Avengers, and the continuation of phase IV of the MCU since Eros, brother of Thanos, could join the Eternals of Earth and / or what remains of the Avengers to form a new team.
In addition, it was recently confirmed that Warlock, of which Pip is a faithful companion in the comics, will be present as Will Poulter in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 by James Gunn, which should start filming shortly. Warlock was created by Ayesha in one of the post-credits scenes in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
So will we also see Pip the Troll and Eros in Guardians of the Galaxy 3? Or will they be in a potential sequel to the Eternals? We will have to wait for more information or the release of the third part of the Guardians, scheduled for May 3, 2023.
