Asked by the American site LA Times about the rape scene which caused controversy in season 1 of The Chronicle of the Bridgertons, Phoebe Dynevor explained that it was necessary to see this on screen.
Season 1 of The Bridgerton Chronicle was a huge success for Netflix, even though the series was at the center of a scene-related controversy: in the latter, the character of Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) takes advantage of the state. intoxicated by her husband (Rege-Jean Page) to try to give birth to her, even though he repeatedly tells her that he does not want it.
A choice assumed by the showrunner, as we explained to you in this article, which allows to start a conversation on the subject. Marital rape, especially when it comes from the woman, is a subject still little adapted to the screen. And although this is a series set in the 19th century, The Bridgertons Chronicle is modern in the themes it tackles.
Asked by the site LA Times, Dynevor in turn explains his position: “We’re telling a story and that’s what happens in Julia Quinn’s novel so we adapted it. It’s great that as artists we can ignite a spark so that people say “Wait, this is not normal”. Just because I played a role doesn’t mean I don’t condemn this behavior. I agree with the people who were outraged, but it’s also necessary to get the subject started, you see?“
This controversy has in any case not tarnished the success of the series: the actors are also back on the sets to shoot season 2 centered on Anthony (Jonathan Bailey). As a reminder, Netflix has already ordered seasons 3 and 4, as well as a spin-off on the youth of Queen Charlotte. The Bridgertons’ Chronicle still has a bright future ahead of it.
