Sports documentaries are all the rage on Netflix these days (The Last Dance, Tony Parker: The Final Shot), but today it’s a somewhat different project that is coming to us on the platform with Il Divin Codino: The Art of the Goal by Roberto Baggio, biopic dedicated to the legend of Italian football.
Ballon d’Or 1993, this round ball artist has strongly marked the history of transalpine sport, thanks in particular to his technical ease and his incredible sense of goal; unfortunate hero, he missed a decisive penalty in the final of the 1994 World Cup against Brazil, an episode which did not in any way hamper his immense popularity with Italian fans.
Roberto Baggio’s career has also been heavily marked by repeat injuries. Until his retirement in 2004, the striker had to face chronic pain, sometimes unbearable, which reinforced the appreciation of the supporters for the self-sacrifice of this outstanding player, still regularly cited as one of the best footballers of all the time !
This is the young Italian actor Andrea Arcangeli, notably revealed by the series Trust by Danny Boyle, who was chosen to lend his features to Roberto Baggio in this new Netflix production; the staging of the feature film was entrusted to the director Letizia Lamartire, previously employed on the Italian series Baby.
Both a story of the career of one of the greatest footballers of all time, but also an intimate dive into the life of a man with an extraordinary personality, Il Divin Codino: The Art of the Goal by Roberto Baggio can be found now on Netflix.
