Tesla CEO Elon Musk told employees in an e-mail sent overnight that the automaker will be trying to restart production at its U.S. auto plant in Fremont, California on Friday afternoon.
Tesla HR manager Valerie Capers Workman sent a separate email to American employees on Thursday evening with further details. She said the Tesla Fremont plant will resume “limited operations” on Friday, bringing in about 30% of the employees who normally work as a team.
Emails from executives do not clearly show how Tesla could make vehicles at Fremont with a reduced workforce.
While many remain on leave, these recalled employees must undergo video training on new security protocols to protect them from Covid-19, said Workman.
In a shorter communication from the CEO, Musk cited a change in health orders in the state. He wrote:
“In light of Governor Newsom’s statement approving manufacturing in California earlier today, we will aim to restart production in Fremont tomorrow afternoon. I will be online personally to help as much as possible. However, if you feel uncomfortable going back to work at this time, please do not feel you have to do it. These are tough times, so thank you so much for working hard to make Tesla successful! “
The California order does not replace county health orders. The county of Alameda, where the factory is located, has an on-site shelter order in effect until May 31, according to county public health department website.
