Torture Porn, Neo Slasher, Sexy Thrillers, Found footage, wave of post-apocalyptic punk films launched by “Mad Max 2” … Each sub-genre has its founding film and films that have attempted to ride the wave. Here are some examples.
In 2015, the documentary Beyond Clueless looked intelligently at the phenomenon of Teen-Movie over the period from 1995 to 2004. Hence the idea of drawing up a small chronology on the sub-genres in cinema.
There is no question of giving you an encyclopedic dossier on the subject, especially as the success of the subgenres evolves in a cyclical manner. If for example Psychosis can be considered as the founding film of the slasher, it has known several periods of decline and revival; and this over more than 50 years.
We have therefore reduced the list of subgenres to a few chronologically close examples (this is important), with each time its “founding” film, then examples of films which have entered the breach, with more or less happiness besides, whether it is films released in theaters or directly on video.
Likewise, for reasons of comprehension and readability, we have not subdivided the categories. So under the banner Heroic Fantasy, you will not find the sub-subgenres that are the Sword & Sorcery, the Dark Fantasy, the Science Fantasy, etc.
