Taxi 5 on TMC: why are Frédéric Diefenthal and Samy Naceri absent?

Taxi 5 on TMC – airs tonight on TMC. The opportunity to come back to the reasons why Samy Naceri and Frédéric Diefenthal did not wish to appear in the credits of this fifth opus.

In 1998, the general public discovered Taxi, which very quickly became a phenomenon! Samy Naceri and Frédéric Diefenthal make an endearing pair. We had Daniel, a pro driving cab driver, and Emilien, a clumsy cop. Building on the success of this action comedy, the two actors are backing up for three other films, released between 2000 and 2007.

Twelve years later, in 2019, a fifth opus was born, but without its two emblematic performers! Taxi 5 gives way to a new tandem: Sylvain Marot (Franck Gastambide), a Parisian super policeman transferred to Marseille, and Eddy Maklouf (Malik Bentalha), the worst VTC driver in the city also nephew of Daniel.

At the start, the actor, director and screenwriter Franck Gastambide wrote a fairly substantial role for Samy Naceri. Daniel must appear at the end of the film to help our two heroes in their fight against the Gang of Italians. But Luc Besson and the other producers do not hear it that way. They want to highlight the characters of Franck Gastambide and Malik Bentalha and limit Naceri’s performance to a simple cameo. Believing that he deserves better than an appearance wink, the interpreter of Daniel categorically refuses to appear in this new part.

“With all due respect to my fans, I couldn’t take so little just to sell their movie when I would have liked to give so much more. Don’t think my absence in this movie is the result of a problem ego. I just expected a minimum of respect after thirty years of cinema to my credit “, Samy Naceri justified himself on his Twitter account.

As for Franck Gastambide, he presents a different version of the facts. For the director of Kaïra, the actor who made a lot of talk about him in the news item would have motivated his refusal by an engagement on an ambitious film to be shot in Russia.

At the same time, when the production asks him to resume very briefly his character of Emilien, Frédéric Diefenthal does not go back to four ways to express his lack of interest in the project. He believes that the presence of Emilien without Daniel makes no sense. “I don’t care! And I say it without bitterness”, he told our colleagues at TVMag. “And then it’s even a real satisfaction that it is done without me: it stuck to my skin and I need to free myself from it.”

The only survivors of previous films: Bernard Farcy and Edouard Montoute. When it hits theaters, Taxi 5 achieves close to 3.7 million admissions. A decent score but well below its predecessors: 6.5 million for Taxi, 10.3 for Taxi 2, 6.1 for Taxi 3 and 4.6 for Taxi 4.
