She had been impatiently awaiting the arrival of Netflix and had signed up within the hour to devour the first season of Daredevil. Since then, she closely follows what comes out every week on the platform to have binge-watching evenings and advise you on the best streaming outputs.

Available today on Netflix, Sweet Girl is an action thriller driven by Jason Momoa and Isabela Merced. That’s all you need to know about the film.

What is it about ?

A man swears to avenge those responsible for his wife’s death, while protecting his daughter, the only family he has left.

Appearances are deceptive

Netflix offers a few action movies during the summer break to accompany our summer evenings. After the acclaimed Beckett, it’s Sweet Girl’s turn to land on the platform. In the cast, a Jason “Aquaman” Momoa in better shape than ever and an Isabela Merced who traded in her explorer backpack for a punching bag.

The former Khal Drago camps here a father, who sees his wife die of cancer. When he learns that the drug supposed to save her has been taken off the market by the competition (with a grim history of bribes), he vows to avenge her. He then leads a merciless war against a large pharmaceutical company and quickly realizes that everyone is involved in this affair. On the run, the man must also protect his daughter …

If Sweet Girl is cataloged as a thriller and an action film – which it really is – it begins above all with moments of life, slow and contemplative, carried by the voice-over of Jason Momoa. A way of living intensely the pain of this family touched by misfortune. Then follows chase sequences and fight scenes brilliantly filmed by Brian Mendoza who signs his first feature film here.

Don’t be fooled by appearances here: a revelation in the latter half of the film completely turns the situation around and gives the title its full meaning. And the few clues distilled by screenwriters Gregg Hurwitz (The Book of Henry) and Philip Eisner do not allow us to predict the final scenario…

Casting side, we also find Adria Arjona (6 Underground) in the role of the mother, Justin Bartha (Hangover) who plays the leader of the pharmaceutical company that the hero tracks down, Amy Brenneman (The Leftovers) as a determined politician, or again Manuel Garcia-Rulfo who plays a pretty terrifying hitman. The film is produced by Jeff Fierson and Brad Peyton, who notably worked on the Canadian series Frontier with Momoa.
