Benoît Jacquot, who for the occasion signs his 26th feature film, had been the assistant to the famous author-filmmaker in the 1970s, as he recalls:
“She had been told that I admired these films, their new and singular strength, she was looking for someone to help her undertake her films to come, a” right arm “she said. When she opened her door, she looked at me for a brief moment before I said a word, and she laughed frankly, and suddenly so did I, like we recognized each other – she let me in. In the next two years, I have her. helped direct three films, Nathalie Granger (1972), La Femme du Gange (1973), India Song (1974), and that’s all I did. “
For the title role and that of the lover, the director of Farewell to the Queen called on Charlotte Gainsbourg (which he found after 3 hearts) and the very fashionable Niels Schneider (Black Diamond). Note that Marguerite Duras had freely adapted this piece with Baxter, Vera Baxter (1977), in which Michel was played by a certain … Gérard Depardieu, then aged 28!
