In 2025, Superman will return to the big screen. With a new face, a new director, a new costume and in a new universe. Here is everything you need to know about this opus entitled “Legacy”.
It's a bird ? Is it a plane? No, it's Superman! Who is preparing to change his face again in the cinema, after having notably had the features of Christopher Reeves, Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill. Or Nicolas Cage if you count his cameo in The Flash.
Taken over by James Gunn, who will also pilot the new version of the DC universe with producer Peter Safran, the Man of Steel will make his return in 2025 with a Superman: Legacy which is actively being prepared. And here is everything we know about it.
Release date: when is Superman Legacy released? Where can we see it?
Takeoff is scheduled for July 9, 2025 in French theaters. If several projects were delayed by the actors' and writers' strike which took place last year, Superman: Legacy was spared. Or let's say that its pre-production was not impacted enough for the filming, and therefore the release, to be postponed, as James Gunn was quick to announce as soon as the movements were completed.
Like Man of Steel or Superman Returns, Legacy will target the summer period to launch. To benefit from the benefits of the sun on Clark Kent, who draws his powers from its rays? Or simply because one of the most iconic superheroes of all time deserves the most exposed season so that his return touches the maximum number of people.
Especially since it will be the spearhead of the future DC Universe, and its success will depend on the future of the shared universe that will be established, on the small and big screen.
Casting: who will be the new Superman?
It's not a tradition, but not far off: like his predecessors, James Gunn has entrusted the role and the cape to an actor little identified with the general public, whose aura will not supplant that of the character. Seen in the series The Politician and Hollywood by Ryan Murphy, or in the film Pearl, the lucky one is called David Corenswet.
Expected this year in the sequel to Twister, the American actor would have triumphed over Tom Brittney and Nicholas Hoult. But the latter, like Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins, who became the Scarecrow after auditioning for the role of Bruce Wayne, will play the nemesis of the Man of Steel, Lex Luthor.
His dear and tender Lois Lane will be played by Rachel Brosnahan, winner of an Emmy Award for The Fabulous Mrs. Maisel, and who would have beaten Emma Mackey and Phoebe Dynevor. We do not know if the journalist will have talents for stand-up here, as in the Prime Video series, but her choice was very appreciated.
Since we're talking about comedy, her Lois Lane will be supported by Jimmy Olsen played by Skyler Gizondo, revealed by Vive les vacances and who is not a novice when it comes to superheroes, since he was the brother of Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in The Amazing Spider-Man.
The reporter will not be too much to support the heroes against the villains already announced: Lex Luthor and his accomplice Eve Tessmacher (Sara Sampaio), or even The Engineer (Maria Gabriela de Faria), capable of changing appearance thanks to liquid metal which replaces his blood. Not forgetting the businessman with mental powers Maxwell Lord, played by Sean Gunn, brother of James.
To the extent that the feature film will contain the word “super” in its title, the latter intends to show it with other characters endowed with superpowers: Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), also capable of flying; Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), expert martial arts athlete; Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), who can transform; or even Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), one of the Green Lanterns from the comic books.
The story: what will Superman Legacy tell?
Does a reboot necessarily have to be an origin story? No. And like The Batman with the Man-Bat, Superman: Legacy won't really reset the counters. If it is not excluded to mention it, the story should not begin on Krypton, and Jor-El and Lara-El might not be there.
Just like the adoptive parents of Clark Kent, whom we will follow in his young superhero years, as he tries to reconcile his human life with his extra-terrestrial origins and his superpowers. And that's all we know, currently, about the screenplay written by James Gunn himself.
If we rely on the typography used to confirm the release date, and which refers in particular to the series from the 50s, his Superman: Legacy could be more colorful and optimistic than that of Zack Snyder. But this is just a guess.
On the other hand, it is certain that the feature film will be the first building block of the future DC Universe, and that the presence of Hawkgirl and Green Lantern (or even Supergirl, expected next in her own film) will serve to tease a world that does not stop on the borders of Metropolis.
On July 9, 2025, you will therefore have to look up to the sky and the screen. Because easter eggs could well be hidden in this Superman: Legacy.
