Although the creators of Stranger Things have preserved the main characters of the series for the time being, despite some scares, they have not hesitated to kill off protagonists that fans have become attached to. And this, even if these characters were present only one season, even only one episode.

While volume 2 of season 4 of the Netflix series contains a death that made fans cry, a look back at the saddest deaths of Stranger Things, which have moved or traumatized us throughout the four available seasons of the Duffer brothers’ series. Benny Hammond (season 1)

You have surely forgotten it but just before slipping into the role of Toby in This Is Uswhich definitely marked his career, Chris Sullivan was in the credits of the first two episodes of Stranger Things! Indeed, the actor played Benny Hammond, the owner of a small restaurant in Hawkins. He is the first to have come into contact with Eleven since he took in the young girl after her escape from the laboratory managed by Dr. Martin Brennen. As she was looking for food in the restaurant, Benny offered it to her rather than throwing her out and called social services to find her a place to live. But his kindness will be his undoing since he will have the misfortune to fall into the trap of Dr. Brenner, who had posed as an employee of the child protection services and who shot him dead. The amount of time Dr. Brenner kills Benny has allowed Eleven to once again escape and find refuge with Mike (Finn Wolfhard).

Barb Holland (season 1)

As soon as its first season was posted on Netflix, Stranger Things created buzz for its characters, its plot, its fantastic universe inspired by the 1980s, but also for the unjust death of a character. Barb’s (Shannon Purser), Nancy’s best friend (Natalia Dyer), killed by the Demogorgon and forgotten by all.

Poor Barb was killed while waiting alone by the pool at a party where Nancy dragged her by force. Her sudden and quite tragic death motivated fans to create a social media hashtag, #JusticeForBarb (“Justice for Barb”, in French), and Nancy never really got over the death, which still haunts her in season 4.

Bob Newby (season 2)

He had everything to be boring but he quickly won the hearts of fans: Bob Newby, Joyce’s boyfriend (Winona Ryder) in Season 2 of Stranger Things, had a tragic ending. This ordinary employee of RadioShack embodied by Sean Astin seduced by his joie de vivre and his kindness, especially towards Will.

But it is his computer knowledge that will reveal it and make Bob a valuable asset for the gang on a mission in the laboratory. And while the writers play on our nerves repeatedly, Bob can’t escape his fate. He gets torn apart by several Demodogs without Joyce or Jim being able to help him. A little angel gone too soon.

Alexei (season 3)

Introduced in Season 3 of Stranger Things, Alexei is a Russian scientist taken hostage by Joyce and Jim during their investigation into the Russian government responsible for reopening the portal in Hawkins leading to the Upside Down. His overly cute face and his childish side had pleased the fans who found this endearing character.

Unfortunately, Alexei is killed by Grigori, a hitman, for treason at the carnival. The fans did not fail to react on the networks and to express their sadness at the death of this character played by the Ukrainian actor Alec Utgoff with the hashtag #AlexeiDeservedBetter (“Alexei deserved better”, in French).

Billy (season 3)

Although he wasn’t the friendliest in Season 3 of Stranger Things, Billy (Dacre Montgomery) still had a tragic fate. Max’s brother (Sadie Sink) was possessed by the Mind Flayer and played a key role in the final battle at Starcourt Mall.

After freaking out and threatening everyone, Billy comes to his senses thanks to Eleven and sacrifices himself to save the young girl, her sister and all their friends. He will be pierced through the heart by the Mind Flayer and his heroic sacrifice will traumatize Max, who will still suffer from this loss in season 4.

Chrissy Cunningham (season 4 episode 1)

Cheerleader Chrissy (Grace Van Dien) is the first victim of Vecna, the main villain of this season. The first episode of this fourth season took the time to introduce this character and to portray her anxieties, traumas and nightmares so that we can empathize with her. To solve her sleep problems, Chrissy goes to see the school psychologist but also Eddie (joseph quinn) from the Hellfire Club who can sell him weed in order to appease him. But the two students do not even have time to develop their discussion, and their relationship, a little more than Chrissy is caught by Vecna ​​and brutally killed in front of Eddie. Fans found that there was a good chemistry between Eddie and Chrissy and they find it a shame that Chrissy is no longer part of the landscape of Stranger Things. Even the creators of the Netflix series, Matt and Ross Dufferconfessed to TVLine that they regretted this choice: “We always have moments like this [‘Qu’avons-nous fait ?’, ndlr]. We shot the drug deal scene in the woods quite late, actually, in the shoot. We had already killed Chrissy when we shot this.”

Eddie Munson (season 4)

This is surely the saddest death of this end of season of Stranger Things, that of Eddie Munson (joseph quinn), the leader of the Hellfire Club wrongly accused of satanic rites and the death of Chrissy, who quickly became a fan favorite. After a crazy guitar performance on Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” in the Upside Down, Eddie sacrifices himself to save Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and gets attacked by demonic bats. He who no longer wanted to flee and who wanted to save Dustin time has proven, if he really had to, his worth and dies a hero in Dustin’s arms, inconsolable at losing his friend. But in Hawkins, he is still seen as the leader of a cult and responsible for evil events. Dustin then wants to tell Eddie’s uncle how much the young man was a good person.
