The Duffer brothers had announced the color: deaths were to be expected in volume 2 of season 4 of Stranger Things. Fans were then eager to know who would pass away in these final episodes while fearing that their favorites would be taken in by this season’s formidable villain, One/Henry/Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), who is actually the great enemy of the series since the beginning.
So, does Volume 2 Season 4 have as many tragic deaths as expected? Yes and no. There are plenty of deaths to count in these final episodes, but fans can take comfort in knowing that the iconic characters are alive and well, for now.
The confirmed deaths
We thought Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) died at the end of season 1. And he came back plump in season 4 to help Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to recover his powers. But above all, he revealed his true intentions: he was using Eleven to find One/Henry/Vecna, his very first patient/child, in the Upside Down.
As he tried to hold her hostage, the army landed to seize Eleven. Dr. Brenner or “Dad” tried to pull her out of there in a last desperate move to keep her under control but he gets shot by the military as Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Will (Noah Schnapp), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Argyle (Eduardo Franco) finally join it. Before dying, Dr. Brenner lets out a few tender words to Eleven, who finally turns away from him and leaves him in the desert.
This is surely the saddest death of this end of season of Stranger Things, that of Eddie Munson (joseph quinn), the leader of the Hellfire’s Club wrongfully accused of satanic rites and the death of Chrissy, who quickly became a fan favorite. After a crazy guitar performance on Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” in the Upside Down, Eddie sacrifices himself to save Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and gets attacked by demonic bats.
He who no longer wanted to flee and who wanted to save Dustin time has proven, if he really had to, his worth and dies a hero in Dustin’s arms, inconsolable at losing his friend. But in Hawkins, he is still seen as the leader of a cult and responsible for evil events. Dustin then wants to tell Eddie’s uncle how much the young man was a good person.
Chrissy’s ex-boyfriend Jason Carver (mason dye), was persuaded of the guilt of Eddie and the Hellfire’s Club. So he broke into the Creel house where Max and Lucas were waiting for Vecna to join them. While Max is in a trance, Lucas is attacked by Jason, armed with a gun, and the two fight.
When Max is no longer under Vecna’s control, Hawkins undergoes a beginning of destruction and finds herself split in several points, as if a giant portal had just opened. As the land splits open, Jason’s body above is cut in half. A lousy end for a character who is just as bad.
And the dead, who aren’t really dead
Eleven manages to break into Max’s thoughts and memories (Sadie Sink) to help her escape Vecna and the long-awaited confrontation between Eleven and Vecna does indeed take place. If Eleven has regained her strength, she becomes disillusioned when Vecna brings her to his Mind Lair, the imaginary place he has created in his mind, while attacking Max. But Eleven hears Mike’s voice expressing his love for her and it gives her the strength to fight against Vecna.
Meanwhile, in the Upside Down, Steve (Joe Keery), Robin (Maya Hawke) and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) find Vecna’s body and set him on fire and shoot him to finish him off. If he seems dead at first glance, it would be surprising for such a villain to pass away in this way, especially since we do not see his dead body. Above all, the end of the season shows us that the Upside Down is taking precedence over reality and that the threat of Vecna still looms large.
Max gets tricked by Vecna while Eleven is helpless. She begins to suffer the same suffering as Chrissy and we feel that Lucas, distraught, is in the process of losing Max, whose heart even stops for a minute. But, thanks to Mike’s speech telling her to fight, Eleven breaks free, outsmarts Vecna, and manages to save Max, who comes back to life but ends up in a coma in the hospital.
The young girl had a narrow escape but her future remains unclear. Because she remains a victim of Vecna, who needed four people to open four portals to unleash the Upside Down onto the real world. Even though Eleven was able to save her body, her soul is no longer of this world and seems to still be possessed by Vecna. Will she wake up? Will she be under the influence of the Mind Flayer? Or will we definitely have to say goodbye to Max in season 5, which will be the last of the series?
