Formerly built in the 16th century, the Stari Most Bridge or commonly known as the Ottoman Bridge in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This heritage bridge connecting two parts of the city is built on the Neretva River. Standing for the last 427 years, this bridge was destroyed by Croat military forces on 9 November 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War. After the massacre, a project to reconstruct the Stari Bridge was started and the rebuilt bridge was opened on July 23, 2004. This heritage bridge was designed and built by Mimar Hayaruddin and beautifully reflects Balkan Islamic architecture. The bridge is seen as a symbol of reconciliation, international cooperation and diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities.
