Star Wars The Phantom Menace on TMC: Jar Jar Binks, a nightmare for his performer

The Phantom Menace is broadcast on TMC, the opportunity to return to a character who has caused much ink to flow: Jar Jar Binks. The actor behind the Gungan suffered the wrath of fans, which nearly cost him his life. Explanations.

In 1999, George Lucas revived his famous star saga 16 years after Return of the Jedi and set out to explore the origins of his legendary characters in The Phantom Menace. Alongside the Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn and a very young Obi-Wan Kenobi, the director, hoping to bring a little humor and lightness to his film, introduced the so-called Jar Jar Binks. A clumsy and clumsy character who ended up making an impression, but not in the desired way.

In a very short time and until today, poor Gungan has indeed found himself catapulted to the rank of the most hated character by fans of the saga, whose virulence and excessiveness are no longer to be proven. A fairly anecdotal situation for the fictional creature, but much less for its interpreter: actor Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar in a motion capture suit.

Ahmed Best performs Jar Jar Binks

The anger of Star Wars fans and the reaction of the media turned into a real ordeal for him for 20 years, closing many doors to him during his career and almost driving him to suicide. If he has now managed to overcome all that, he does not forget the distress that was his until recently, as he expressed on Twitter in July 2018:

“Next year it will be 20 years since I suffered a violent media reaction which still affects my career today,” he said, posting a photo where he faces a bridge with his son. “This is where I almost ended my life. It’s always hard to talk about. I survived, and today this little guy is my gift.”

Social networks did not exist at the time, we dare not imagine what the actor would have suffered if the film had been released in 2020. Ahmed Best, however, remained very attached to his character of Jar Jar Binks, continuing to him lend his voice in the animated series Clone Wars between 2008 and 2014.
