8 years after selling Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, the creator of the Star Wars saga told in the book “The Star Wars Archives” under what circumstances he had sold the rights to his famous franchise.
8 years ago, the director and creator of the Star Wars saga George Lucas retired, and sold the rights of his company Lucasfilm to the Walt Disney Company.
Even if he had already mentioned this passing of the torch several times in the past, he recently returned in more detail to the circumstances of this transaction and the reasons that led him to withdraw from the distant galaxy, very distant, after having considered the possibility of producing a third trilogy himself.
“It takes 10 years to make a trilogy”, he told Paul Duncan, author of The Star Wars Archives. “Episodes I to III were made between 1995 and 2005. (…) [Donc] I would still be working on episode IX [en 2022] ! In 2012, I was 69 years old. So the question was, am I going to keep doing this for the rest of my life? Do I want to go through this again? Finally, I decided to raise my daughter, and enjoy life a bit. “
The filmmaker continues the interview by explaining that he had also considered keeping Lucasfilm and finding a successor within the company. An option that he finally dismissed, believing himself incapable of staying in the background and not intervening if the saga was still in his fold:
“I’m one of those micromanagers, and I can’t help it. So I concluded that I was going to give it up, enjoy what I had. And I was eager to spend time with my daughter. . I also wanted to build a museum (…)“, he explained, confident despite everything that his decision had not been easy, and that he had been rather disappointed with his involvement in postlogy, too anecdotal for his taste:
“I spent my entire life making Star Wars – 40 years – and giving it up was very, very painful. But it was the right thing to do. I thought I was going to have a little more of my say. on the three new films because I had already started them, but they decided they wanted to do something else. Things don’t always turn out the way you want them to. Life is like that. “
