Mentioned by Yoda in the final version of “Revenge of the Sith”, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn was initially to communicate with him in a cut scene from the film. Back on this short sequence, available on Disney + …
The scene takes place during the last minutes of Revenge of the Sith, episode 3 of the Star Wars saga (available on Disney +). As Anakin has just crossed over to the Dark Side and Yoda and Obi-Wan seek refuge for Luke and Leia, the old Jedi confides in his disciple about his former master: according to him, Qui-Gon Jinn, who had been killed by Darth Maul at the end of The Phantom Menace, reportedly “discovered the way to immortality” and would be “returned from the depths of the Force.”
“Communicate with him, I will teach you”Yoda promises Obi-Wan, thus foreshadowing some sequences of the original trilogy in which Luke is able to speak to his old masters, who have passed away but still present by his side in the form of ghostly appearances.
However, even if the cinema version of Revenge of the Sith does not allow us to observe such a dialogue between Qui-Gon and Yoda, a short cut scene (available in the bonus section of the film on Disney +) shows us more. Meditating in a base hidden on an asteroid, Yoda hears the voice of his old friend:
“When I merged into the Force, I made a great discovery. With my training, you will learn to blend into the Force at will. Your physical being will fade away but you will still have your consciousness. You will become more powerful. than anything a Jedi could have imagined. “
This last sentence of course echoes the reply given by Obi-Wan to Darth Vader during their duel in episode IV, and therefore allows us to learn that Qui-Gon was the very first Jedi to experience this communication. posthumously, later imitated by Obi-Wan, then by Yoda.
This question of immortality is also at the center of episode III since, as a reminder, it is by making him dangle a completely different way of conquering death (totally false, for once) that Palpatine succeeds in corrupting Anakin .
On the one hand, the Sith refuse to accept the reality of death, and therefore sink deeper into fear, anger, the Dark Side. At the same time, almost in parallel, the Jedi, for their part, realize that by welcoming their death as a natural event, they are awakening to a new life. The circle is therefore complete.
