Between rumors and reliable information, the cast of “Spider-Man 3” has agitated the Web in recent weeks. To help you see more clearly and disentangle the true from the false, here are the names of the characters who have already been confirmed.
2020 was to mark the start of the highly anticipated Phase IV of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that of the post-Avengers Endgame, which will develop both in cinema and on the small screen. But the Covid-19 pandemic has passed through there, and fans have found themselves without any production signed by Marvel Studios since 2009. La Maison des Idées will therefore be working hard in the coming months, with a line-up for least rich: WandaVision kicks off hostilities on January 15 on Disney +, followed by Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Loki, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals and finally Spider-Man 3.
Still directed by Jon Watts, who had directed the first two parts, this third episode of the trilogy launched in 2017 has made a lot of talk in recent weeks on the casting side. Because everything suggests that the map of the multiverse will be played with a story in which actors from previous sagas will resume their respective roles. While rumors have come to muddy the waters and throw some trouble on some announcements, here are the names that have already been confirmed for the feature film expected on December 15 on our screens.
SPIDER-MAN (TOM HOLLAND)
If prestigious guests are expected in the credits, the film remains above all the third episode of the saga carried by Tom Holland. Five years after his debut in Captain America – Civil War, the English actor will once again take center stage as Peter Parker struggles: following the twists and turns in the last seconds of Far From Home, the superhero should be a fugitive. And don’t count on JJ Jonah Jameson’s Daily Bugle to back it up. Quite the contrary.
As with Peter, it’s hard to envision an episode of this saga without MJ, who is one of its most beloved characters, and is likely to play an important role when it comes to supporting the hero and lending him help, while their relationship has reached a milestone in the previous opus. Coming from the Disney Channel team, her interpreter Zendaya is now the winner of an Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Dramatic Series thanks to Euphoria, and her name could come back at the next Academy Awards, since her performance in Malcolm & Marie would have a good chance of getting him at least one nomination.
MJ won’t be Peter’s only comrade to make his comeback as his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) will also be there, as will the pretentious Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) with whom the atmosphere was a little more cordial. end of Far From Home than at the beginning of Homecoming. Without forgetting, of course, the hero’s Aunt May, still played by Marisa Tomei. There is finally no confirmation (yet?) From their side, but it would be surprising if Betty Brant (Angourie Rice) does not return, or that JK Simmons does not reprise his role as JJ Jonah Jameson after this surprise cameo in the post-credits scene of the latest opus.
MAX DILLON / ELECTRO (JAMIE FOXX)
The one who started it all. The comeback that hinted at fans that their multiverse dreams might just come true. On October 1, The Hollywood Reporter announces in fact that Jamie Foxx joins the cast of the feature film to play the villainous Max Dillon, alias Electro, able to manipulate electricity and… to whom he already lent his features, facing Andrew Garfield, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. Will it be the same character? From another version? While waiting for an interview or a trailer to offer us some concrete information, the main interested party implied that it would not be blue in a message posted on Instagram and immediately deleted.
OTTO OCTAVIUS / DOCTOR OCTOPUS (ALFRED MOLINA)
No, this Spider-Man 3 won’t be just a second chance story. Because not content to bring back one of the less convincing villains of Peter Parker’s film adventures in the person of Electro, the feature film will also summon one of the best. If not the best: Doctor Octopus and his metallic tentacles that he can control with his mind, and to whom Sam Raimi had offered a very humane treatment before putting him to death in 2004. Here again, several questions arise. as to how it will be presented in Jon Watts’ feature film. Will we be faced with another approach? Or will Tom Holland, following a possible journey between dimensions and parallel worlds, find himself projected in one of the sequences of Spider-Man 2, in the middle of a fight between Tobey Maguire and Alfred Molina ?
DOCTOR STRANGE (BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH)
It is no doubt thanks to him that this story of parallel dimensions and alternative realities will be made possible. After their first meeting in Avengers Infinity War, Doctor Strange will find Spider-Man, and undoubtedly replace Tony Stark in the role of mentor of Peter Parker. Among other things, because there is no doubt that the Supreme Sorcerer embodied by Benedict Cumberbatch will have to speak about his mastery of the mystical arts in this story whose outlines remain, for the moment, mysterious.
But it is already clear that Jon Watts’ film will be the second installment in a trilogy around the notion of multiverse, with WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, expected on March 23, 2022 on our screens. Will he help Peter to become innocent again by changing the past with his powers, even if it means generating unforeseen consequences? Or will he be called in as a backup following the repercussions of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) ‘s actions in her own series?
At the moment, several names have also been mentioned, but without confirmation: according to rumors, Charlie Cox would reprise his role as Matt Murdoch / Daredevil and present himself as Peter Parker’s lawyer, while Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are said to be also expected for a spider-web reunion that fans no longer dared to dream of. It is also about Mary Jane Watson, played by Kirsten Dunst. And the Gwen Stacy embodied by Emma Stone, whose presence would be conditioned by questions of schedule, since the actress awaits a happy event.
While waiting for confirmations (or not), it is advisable to take these announcements and those speaking, for example, of a return of the Green Goblin Willem Dafoe, with big tweezers. Especially since Kevin Feige took advantage of the WandaVision press conference to clarify that some rumors about Spider-Man 3 were true, and others were false. It remains to be seen which ones.
