Alex Murdaugh is the South Carolina attorney that survived a roadside gunshot wounding his wife and son. Now, he is under investigation for mishandling funds from his former law firm.
The State Law Enforcement Division of South Carolina announced Monday that it was investigating allegations that Murdaugh had “misappropriated money” from the Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth, & Detrick legal firm. Murdaugh, 53 years old, stated in a statement that he had resigned to go into rehab and that he made “a lot of mistakes that I really regret.”
Murdaugh’s allegations were made public by the family-founded company earlier this month. They also stated that an accountant forensics would be conducting an internal investigation. Within two days of the announcement, Murdaugh’s license had been suspended indefinitely.
It is not clear how much Murdaugh was accused of taking from the company and what it was used for.
Chief Mark Keel, S.C. Law Enforcement Division, urged patience as the investigation progresses.
Keel stated Monday that the “investigative decisions” made throughout the case and in any other related cases must be able to withstand scrutiny by the criminal justice system. “SLED, as with all cases, is committed to conducting an impartial, professional, thorough and impartial criminal investigation no matter what the facts may lead us to.”
Murdaugh was the focus of intrigue after the murders of his wife Margaret and their son Paul. According to his 911 call, he found their bodies on the ground close to the family’s dog-kennels. They had been shot several times.
The State Law Enforcement Division is currently investigating the double homicide.
Officials have not indicated that the shootings at Margaret, 52, or Paul, 22 are connected to Alex Murdaugh’s.
Paul Murdaugh was scheduled to stand trial on three felonies related to the 2019 drowning of Mallory Beach (aged 19), in a boating accident. According to authorities, he was drunk while driving a boat and crashed into it. Beach was thrown overboard. The body of Beach was discovered a week later.
Murdaugh reported on Sept. 4 that he had been the victim of a roadside shooting. Murdaugh told 911 that he was shot while changing a tire in rural Hampton County. Murdaugh was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah, Georgia for treatment of a “superficial” head injury.
