This Saturday May 8 at 9:05 pm, Chérie 25 will launch the broadcast of “Sissi, birth of an empress”; a mini-series in two episodes which looks back on the fate of Elisabeth de Wittelsbach, Empress of Austria.

What is it about ?

Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph is promised to Hélène, a Duchess of Bavaria. But when he meets his younger sister Elisabeth nicknamed “Sissi”, he immediately falls in love with her. Against all expectations, the emperor therefore decides to marry Sissi despite the reluctance of his mother Archduchess Sophie.

For the young man’s mother, Sissi is unconventional and incapable of respecting the rules imposed on her by her new rank. If Sissi is going to blow a wind of freedom on the Austrian court, she does not know that her destiny will change forever …

A personality that fascinates

With more than 25 productions to her credit, the story of Elisabeth de Wittelsbach, nicknamed Sissi, continues to inspire filmmakers. The best-known adaptation remains undeniably that of 1955, Sissi by Ernst Marischka, which saw the young Romy Schneider slip into the sumptuous dresses of the famous empress.

It must be said that Elisabeth’s life has something to fascinate. Married at the age of 16 to Emperor Franz Joseph I, who fell madly in love with her, she refuses to comply with the customs of the monarchy, which generates conflicts with her mother-in-law, the Archduchess Sophie of Bavaria.

Suffering from depression, health issues and failing to adjust to life at court, she spends most of her life traveling. It was also during one of her many trips that she was assassinated in 1898.

With its budget of 11 million euros, Sissi: Birth of an Empress is one of the last iterations in the history of the Empress to date. This European production is carried by Cristiana Capotondi, an Italian actress who played Guinevere in the series Merlin, in which she had the opportunity to give the answer to Gérard Jugnot and Marilou Berry.

The German actress Martina Gedeck plays, for her part, Sophie of Bavaria, mother of the Emperor of Austria. Very well known in her country of origin, she notably played in La Bande à Baader, which was nominated in 2009 for the Oscars in the category best foreign film. David Rott, Licia Maglietta, Herbert Knaup and Fritz Karl complete the cast.

Composed of two episodes of 1h45 each, Sissi: Birth of an Empress can be found on Saturdays May 8 and 15 from 9:05 p.m. on Chérie 25.
