In theaters this January 12, “Scream” by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett marks the big comeback of Ghostface on the big screen. To be up to date, here’s a recap of things to know before heading back to Woodsboro.
If the period is in masks, another well-known is about to return to the front of the stage. Ghostface, the killer addicted to phones and knives, returns to the screens. Eleven years after Scream 4, the saga launched by Wes Craven in 1996 has not finished screaming and still has many secrets to reveal. But this brand new film, simply titled Scream, is not a traditional sequel, nor a reboot.
Set in the fictional town of Woodsboro, the story is carried by new characters, but also a few familiar faces. The opportunity for horror film fans to find a trio that is dear to them: Sidney, Gale and Dewey. Before running in the halls, here is what you need to know.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?
As calm appears to have returned to Woodsboro, new victims fall to the stab wounds of a masked murderer. Directly targeted by these attacks, a young woman named Sam Carpenter will turn to an expert to solve the case and ask for his help. This expert, it is Dewey Riley, former sheriff of the city, who lived this nightmare on several occasions.
To support him, he calls on two others of his acquaintances: Sidney Prescott, now a mother, and Gale Weathers, now presenter for a famous morning show in New York. Finally reunited, the trio will discover that the past has not finished with them.
AND IT’S DONE BY WHOM?
Figure of American horror cinema and author of the first four Scream, Wes craven passed away on August 30, 2015. For this new feature film, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are taking up the torch. Both belong to the Radio Silence collective, already at the work of the film Wedding Nightmare, a little surprise hailed by the critics.
On the screenplay side, Kevin Williamson, author of the first film and two other sequels, is not back. The script is signed Guy Busick – already behind the story of Wedding nightmare – and James Vanderbilt, screenwriter, among others, of Zodiac by David Fincher.
Alongside Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox, a new cast will punctuate this Scream version 2022: Dylan Minnette, the hero of 13 Reasons Why; Mason Gooding, appeared in Love, Victor; Kyle Gallner, actor of Jennifer’s Body; Jack Quaid, known for the series The Boys; Mikey Madison, noticed in the Once upon a time in hollywood by Quentin Tarantino; Melissa Barrera, star of the musical Where we come from; Sonia Ben Ammar, appeared in Jappeloup and Jenna Ortega, next Wednesday Addams for Tim Burton. Finally, Marley Shelton, already present in Scream 4, will return to her role as Judy Hicks.
BUT HOW HAS SCREAM 4 ENDED ALREADY?
Please note, the following paragraphs reveal the plot of Scream 4.
In the fourth film, Sidney Prescott publishes his memoirs in the hope of helping other victims. In the middle of a promotional tour for her book, she makes a stop in Woodsboro. A visit that coincides with the 15 years of the very first attacks. Here then.
Accompanied by Rebecca (Alison Brie), an unscrupulous press secretary, the most famous survivor reunites with family members, such as her aunt, Kate (Mary McDonnell) and her niece, Jill (Emma Roberts).
What about Dewey and Gale in all of this? The first has become a respected sheriff, a nice revenge on his beginnings, as for the second, nothing goes. The journalist is bored in her married life and finds no more inspiration to write. But a new drama will put her back on track.
After the first two victims, the murders follow one another at lightning speed. For those around Sidney, cursed to the end, it is better not to pick up the phone and take his legs around his neck. The suspects are numerous and the killer seems more inspired than ever. This time he’s filming his crimes.
As in the first Scream, the final act takes place at a party, that of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere), Jill’s best friend. The horror film enthusiast comes to the aid of Charlie (Rory Culkin), geek of the gang, who stabs her before revealing his involvement in the massacre.
Once again, the criminal works with an associate: Jill, Sidney Prescott’s niece. Really, what a family. Determined to be famous like her aunt, the young woman wants to become the perfect victim to shine in front of cameras around the world. She gets rid of her accomplice and the heroine, before turning the living room into a crime scene.
But nobody gets rid of Sidney Prescott so easily. Despite her injuries, she survives and finds herself transferred to the hospital. Hearing the announcement from Dewey, Jill decides to finish the job once and for all.
In our poor Sidney’s room, it’s a festival: punches rain, screams rouse the whole floor, as Dewey and Gale join in this hellish climax. In the end, it’s Sidney who has the last word. She grabs the sheriff’s pistol and shoots her own niece. A murderer who still won her little moment of glory in the media.
Scream, at the cinema on January 12, 2022.
