My family first: an endearing family sitcom
2001/2005 – Seasons 1 to 5 – Broadcast daily for years on the channels of the M6 group, My family first keeps a special place in the hearts of the French. Worn by Damon Wayans, the series is ideal for boosting morale, as the episodes can be watched with pleasure each time. Husband and happy father, Michael Kyle shares the joys and sorrows of family life. And always in a good mood, with a touch of mischief. 124 episodes on the clock, and yet we never tire of seeing Michael juggling the vagaries of life as a couple and his three children who never stop giving him a hard time. The sitcom also allows you to meet the famous basketball player Michael Jordan or other celebrities such as Shaquille O’Neal, LeBron James, Sofía Vergara, Lou Ferrigno, Betty White, Taylor Lautner and Serena Williams.
Buffy the vampire slayer: a pop culture benchmark
1997/2003 – Seasons 1-7 – After the disappointing film starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, Joss Whedon re-adapts the story of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer to serial format, with Sarah Michelle Gellar headlining. And success is immediately apparent. Better still, the show becomes cult and remains a reference of Girl Power and pop culture. Under her ingenuous blonde appearance, the heroine throws harsh lines and shows incredible strength and unsuspected resources, until then reserved for men. Supported by her precious friends, the Chosen One prevents Evil from spreading on Earth. Besides a few essential episodes, the show has the merit of maturing over the seasons, adopting a decidedly darker tone and exploring more difficult subjects.
Parks & Recreation: a must-see political comedy
2009/2015 – Seasons 1-7 – Developed by the creators of the iconic The Office, Parks & Recreation manages to build its own popularity. Conceived as a docu-fiction, the series follows the daily life of employees of the Department of Parks and Recreation in the town of Pawnee, Indiana. This immersion behind the scenes of local politics portrays a rather surreal universe. Amy Poehler, until then star of the mythical Saturday Night Live, camp here the ambitious Leslie Knope, surrounded by merry quirky and endearing drilles. Among them, the public will recognize Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Adam Scott, Rob Lowe and a certain Chris Pratt, future Star-Lord of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Although fictional, the characters in this comedy like no other could gain a special place in your heart.
Desperate Housewives: housewives like never before
2004/2012 – Seasons 1 to 8 – Marc Cherry, hitherto unknown, knows the consecration thanks to his Desperate Housewives. Refreshing, original and deeply delicious, the series at the same time ensures the popularity of the female performers who share (very jealously) the poster: from Marcia Cross to Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria. True women of character sweeping away stereotypes about American housewives, these ladies from the chic suburb of Wisteria Lane will see the varnish of their seemingly perfect lives crack little by little, to reveal their darkest secrets. Spicy and funny, Desperate Housewives mixes suspense, mysteries, tragedies and a good number of funny situations.
Seinfeld: the sitcom that paved the way for Friends
1989/1998 – Seasons 1 to 9 – A few years before Friends, The Office and Modern Family, Seinfeld is born and shakes up the codes of the classic sitcom. Little known in our hexagon, the series born from the collaboration between Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David is an incredible success on American screens and is even becoming a real social phenomenon. Alongside Seinfeld who plays his own role, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards and Jason Alexander reveal the full extent of their talent and make the many viewers who have become addicted to laugh. With a protagonist from stand-up, the series has the particularity of talking about “nothing”. And this is its strength. An insignificant everyday detail takes on enormous proportions. Seinfeld does not hesitate to play on each other’s neuroses, and to tackle taboo subjects, especially for the time. Essential.
And as a bonus, soon on SALTO …
Nip / Tuck: Ryan Murphy’s debut success
2003/2010 – Seasons 1 to 7 – After the teen show Popular, Ryan Murphy (Glee, AHS, Ratched…) changes register with Nip / Tuck, a medical series which has the particularity of immersing us in the world of cosmetic surgery. At the helm of the Miami private clinic, two medical friends who will be tested by life. Already, Murphy was showing his penchant for decadence and his desire to shake up American morality and Puritanism. Politically incorrect, Nip / Tuck is dedicated to pushing the boundaries season after season. Trashy, the show is not afraid to make you feel uncomfortable by addressing the most disturbing deviations and exploring the darkest places of the human soul. Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon, the two protagonists, received at the time a most diverse clientele. Judge for yourself: Catherine Deneuve, Jacqueline Bisset, Famke Janssen, Peter Dinklage, Melanie Griffith, Bradley Cooper, Rose McGowan and even a certain Sarah Paulson.
