Actress Hannah John-Kamen – who plays Ghost in Ant-Man and the Wasp – has just been chosen to play Red Sonja in the movie directed by Joey Soloway (Transparent)
After playing the evil Ghost in the Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp, Hannah John-Kamen will lend her features to the barbarian warrior Red Sonja.
Adapted from the heroic fantasy Marvel comic, the feature film is co-written by Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider) for Netflix and Joey Soloway (Transparent), who is also directing the film.
Soloway states: “Hannah is a very talented actress that we have followed for years and she is Red Sonja. His range of play, his sensibilities and his strength are qualities that we seek and we could not be more excited to embark on this journey together.“
In development for 10 years at Millenium Films, the screenplay passed through the hands of Robert Rodriguez, who had hired Rose McGowan to play the medieval warrior, before being entrusted to Simon West, who for his part was considering Amber Heard for the role. -title, and finally arrive on Bryan Singer’s desk.
But following accusations of rape of a minor, the latter was finally blacklisted and the project was once again put on standby. This new version seems to be the right one and the project is progressing quickly.
Who is Red Sonja?
First appeared in the comic-book Conan the Barbarian in February 1973, the heroine created by screenwriter Roy Thomas and cartoonist Barry Windsor-Smith was inspired by Sonya de Rogatino, a character invented by writer Robert E. Howard in the novel The Shadow of the Vulture.
In the comic-book, Red Sonja is a barbarian warrior in a chainmail bikini who evolves during the days of Conan the Barbarian. This character has already been embodied in the cinema in 1985 by Brigitte Nielsen in the film Kalidor, the legend of the talisman of Richard Fleischer. The Danish actress played the warrior alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger who played the role of Kalidor.
Where have we seen Hannah John-Kamen before?
Red Sonja could mark a milestone in the career of British actress Hannah John-Kamen. The latter, which we could see in the series The Hour, Happy Valley, Black Mirror or the time of 2 episodes of the sixth season of Game of Thrones (she plays Ornela, member of Dosh Khaleen), had not until here held only supporting roles in the cinema.
In Roar Uthaug’s Tomb Raider, she plays Sophie, one of Lara Croft’s best friends played by Alicia Vikander. She is villainous F’Nale Zandor in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One and fights Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Hannah John-Kamen will be starring in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the reboot of the famous franchise, from November 24th.
