Shouldn’t Culture benefit from a sovereign ministry?
A recent note from December 2021 from the Court of Auditors demonstrates that the Ministry of Culture has largely lost its central role as the initiator of cultural policy. My ambition is to restore all of its luster to the Ministry of Culture and to remake it into a strategic Ministry that promotes French culture in the world.
Is cinema necessarily a political art? What inspires you about the recovery that can be done around a work, such as “Bac Nord” recently?
The cinema, if we forget the pure entertainment cinema which drains, it must not be forgotten, the largest share of admissions to cinemas, can be considered a “political art” since by nature it speaks of what we are, of our society, of its failings and its passions. It is an instrument of ambition, of escape, of dreaming of a better world and of denouncing our weaknesses, among many other things. It is also this art of freedom which fascinates so many spectators: it is therefore inevitable for certain films which are perceived as a showcase of our society, to be quoted by women or men politicians.
Do cinema and series have, among other things, the vocation, in your opinion, of helping to “move the lines” on societal issues (parity, diversity, etc.)?
Cinema and series are arts of their time and are by nature inspired by the major social issues that cross it. Authors and directors are therefore the first to represent social issues in order to raise awareness, and we can only welcome this. But these artists are above all free men and women, totally free in their artistic choices. It is this absolute freedom that we admire and that French cinema does itself the honor of defending by financing so many works by filmmakers threatened in their countries of origin. Conversely, there can be no question for anyone in France to dictate choices to artists, because if that were to be the case we would leave the field of art to join that of propaganda.
