Emma Stone and the director of The Favorite, Yórgos Lánthimos will meet to shoot Poor Things. A Gothic tale adapted from the novel by Scottish author Alasdair Gray.
Two years after The Favorite and its 8 Oscar nominations, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos and actress Emma Stone reunite for the feature film Poor Things, a gothic tale with Frankenstein accents. Adapted from the homonymous novel by Alasdair Gray, this singular story follows Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by her husband after drowning. The latter having replaced his brain with that of their unborn child. The screenplay will be written by Tony McNamara, already at work on La Favorite. Filming is scheduled for fall 2021.
The director therefore plans to shoot this film before his two other projects: the adaptation of the novel by Jim Thompson Pop. 1280 and The Hawkline Monster. This is Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s third collaboration since the duo met in Athens early last year to shoot a short film for the Greek National Opera.
As a reminder, another film with a woman in the role of Frankenstein’s creature is planned this year. In Sebastián Lelio’s Bride, Scarlett Johansson will play a woman created to be an ideal bride who rebels and rejects her creator. The film is produced by Apple Tv + and A24 and is inspired by the classic by James Whale Frankenstein’s Bride.
