Released in 2001, “Pearl Harbor” airs tonight on W9. The opportunity to come back to the different actors anticipated in the skin of the main characters of this war film by Michael Bay.
Released in 2001, Pearl Harbor centers, as its title indicates, on the famous Japanese attack which pushes the United States to go to war in 1941. If Michael Bay pays particular attention to special effects (special mention to the tori diving on a boat), the blockbuster is widely criticized because of its Hollywood side taken to its climax. It is indeed also question of a love triangle made up of Rafe and Danny, two pilots friends of childhood, and Evelyn, a nurse.
Detroit, Columbine … 10 cities that tell bloody pages of American history
Originally, Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer wish Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow as the three main characters. Or a trio of young actors that everyone snapped up at the end of the 1990s. But they refused to take part in the film for reasons of schedule (probably to shoot Bourne for Matt Damon, which is proves judicious as the spy film relaunches his career after the failures of The Legend of Bagger Vance and So Pretty Horses).
Matt Damon: he almost played in Avatar, The Dark Knight, Daredevil …
Ben Affleck, however, changes his mind and accepts. Ashton Kutcher is then considered for Danny but it is the very fashionable Josh Hartnett (idol of young people thanks to his performances in Halloween 20 years later, The Faculty, etc.) who inherits the character. Charlize Theron is in demand for the nurse (Kate Beckinsale) but prefers to shoot the romance Sweet November. For the characters of Roosevelt and Doolittle, Gene Hackman and Kevin Costner are approached before Jon Voight and Alec Baldwin.
When it came out, Pearl Harbor made a lot of 450 million dollars worldwide. A solid score for a budget of 140 million but still a little disappointing compared to Armageddon and its 555 million.
