The last few months have been synonymous with confinement for a large part of the population. It will also be discussed in Alexandre Aja’s new film, Oxygen, due out in spring 2021 on Netflix. In this suffocating camera, Mélanie Laurent plays a young woman locked in spite of herself in a cryogenic capsule. When she wakes up, she remembers nothing. Her name and past are foreign to her, as is the reason she finds herself trapped. As she begins to run out of air, she will have to piece together the pieces of the puzzle to survive.

Written by Christie LeBlanc, the screenplay was one of the projects on Hollywood’s infamous blacklist – a ranking of the best scripts that have yet to be funded. Initially involved in another American production, Alexandre Aja finally had to return to France during the first confinement, in March 2020. This is where Oxygen was born. “VS‘was a mise en abyme of what we were going through at that time. This reflection on oxygen, air, the fact of breathing … There was a kind of evidence. With the other producers, we decided to send it to Netflix, which reacted very quickly.“, explains the filmmaker in an exclusive interview published by our colleagues from First.

Shot during the summer of 2020, the film is mainly on the shoulders of Mélanie Laurent, central figure in this camera. For Alexandre Aja, the choice of the actress was obvious: “I wanted to work with her for a long time. We had crossed paths at the time ofInglourious Basterds, thanks to Quentin Tarantino. It was the actress who seemed to me the most believable and able to embody the character as I understood it.

According to the director, Oxygen is “a thriller like it was Crawl”, with, as a bonus, many twists and turns. Alongside Mélanie Laurent, Mathieu Amalric and Malik Zidi complete the cast. While waiting for its arrival on Netflix, discover the first images
