It is a sequence that will go down in the annals of the Oscars. After the Best Actor award refused by Marlon Brando in 1973 or the imbroglio around the Best Film award for La La Land (finally awarded to Moonlight), it is a new totally surreal scene that took place this Sunday 27 march on the boards of the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Chris Rock was supposed to present the award for Best Documentary that night. Before announcing the name of the winner, the comedian chose to address a few jokes against the public present. Among his targets: Jada Pinkett Smith, the wife of Will Smith. Targeting the appearance of the actress, and more particularly her shaved head (due to the alopecia from which she suffers), the actor went too far by daring a joke in very bad taste.

In a total misunderstanding, leaving first think of a premeditated sketch, Will Smith then went on stage to hit Chris Rock in the face. Totally shocked by the gesture, the latter first tried to react with humor, commenting in front of a dumbfounded audience: “Will Smith just stuck one on me”.

But the anger did not immediately subside. Sitting back in his chair, Will Smith was then shown screaming insanity, including ordering Chris Rock not to say his wife’s name. “with his fucking mouth”. This a few minutes before being called to go on stage again… to receive his Oscar for Best Actor, rewarding his performance in the film The Williams Method!

Calmed by the words of Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry during a commercial break, Will Smith then offered a half-worded apology for his attitude, his eyes red with emotion: “In this business, some people will disrespect you and you have to smile, act like it’s normal. Denzel Washington just said to me, ‘beware the devil always comes in moments of triumph’.”

Many Internet users reacted to this already cult sequence:
