Who will succeed Parasite, who created the surprise last year? Nomadland will he complete his flawless, after triumphing in Venice, Toronto, the Golden Globes and many other ceremonies? What you need to know about the Oscars this Sunday.
WHERE AND WHEN TO SEE THE CEREMONY?
It’s the home stretch of this awards season like no other: the 93rd Academy Awards take place on April 25. It will begin precisely at 2 a.m., French time. CANAL + will offer a special program earlier in the evening to accompany the event: on Sunday morning, from 11:50 a.m., the program En route vers les Oscars, presented by Didier Allouch, and in the evening from 11:55 p.m., Live from the Oscars, presented by Laurent Weil and journalists Lily Bloom and Ava Cahen from Paris and by Didier Allouch live from the Red Carpet in Los Angeles.
Despite the pandemic, the Oscars have found a configuration favoring face-to-face, unlike recent ceremonies organized in the United States such as the Golden Globes. Many prestigious presenters are announced.
Despite everything, this will be an unprecedented set-up, with the event taking place this year from different locations: the Oscars will be broadcast from Union Station in Los Angeles, the Dolby Theater and the Highland Center in Hollywood, as well as from abroad via satellite.
Note, if you have not planned to watch the ceremony at night, that CANAL + social networks will broadcast extracts, and Monday evening, at 10:50 p.m., CANAL + will broadcast a 45-minute best-of.
Which films in the running?
Who will succeed Parasite, who created the surprise last year? Nomadland will he complete his flawless, after triumphing in Venice, Toronto, the Golden Globes and many other ceremonies? First elements of response with the appointments.
David Fincher’s Mank takes the lead and once again illustrates the preponderant place of platform films in this season of extraordinary awards. Netflix is essential with several films: Mank therefore, but also The 7 of Chicago and The Blues of Ma Rainey, with the late Chadwick Boseman, big favorite in the best actor category. Amazon Prime Video is also in the race with Borat 2 and One Night in Miami.
Mank as lead
With 10 nominations, Mank is one step ahead of the other favorites of this 2020-2021 vintage in which emerge in particular the expected Nomadland by Chloe Zhao and The Father by Florian Zeller, with 6 nominations each. These nominations hold quite a few surprises in the end, apart from the large number of nominations won by Minari, which also totals 6.
Inclusion and diversity
The prominence of this film directed by Lee Isaac Chung gives the impression of more inclusive appointments. Indeed, after the coronation of Parasite at the beginning of 2020, these nominations count several firsts: Chloé Zhao is the first Asian woman nominated in the directorial category and Steven Yeun is the first Asian actor in history to receive a nomination in the best actor category.
We also welcome the nomination of Riz Ahmed, the first actor of Pakistani origin to be nominated in the actor category. In all of Oscar history, only 9 diverse actors have been nominated. On the documentary side, the film Time, directed by Garrett Bradley, also makes history: it is the first directed by a black woman to be named in this category since Ava DuVernay in 2016.
These nominations also hide a great first: the simultaneous nomination, the same year, of two directors, in this case Chloe Zhao (winner of the Golden Globes 2 weeks ago) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman). Remember that in the history of the Oscars, only seven women have reached the nominations for the achievement category (Lina Wertmüller, Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Emerald Fennell and Chloé Zhao).
Among the surprises, we can note the absence of Tahar Rahim among the darlings of this award season, after his nominations in particular at the Golden Globes and at the BAFTAs for his remarkable role in Designated Guilty.
France will nevertheless be able to do well thanks to The Father directed by Florian Zeller, nominated 6 times (including best film, adapted screenplay, and for Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman). On the technical Oscars side, we should mention the presence of Frédéric Thoraval, nominated for his work on Promising Young Woman.
For Best foreign language film, Filippo Meneghetti’s outsider Deux, candidate for France, is not part of the last shortlist. Without going too far, Drunk stands out as the favorite, with Thomas Vinterberg also cited for Best Direction. Note that the animated short film category has a Frenchman, in the person of Adrien Mérigeau and his film Genius Loci. The documentary short category includes in its shortlist the French film Colette, returning to the route of the former resistance member Colette Marin-Catherine.
Who are the big absentees?
If most of the films that set the pace for this award season are there (Mank, The Chicago Seven, Nomadland …), others are illustrated by their absence. As at the Golden Globes, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet is snubbed by the Academy of Oscars, with only two technical nominations (sets and visual effects). Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods is selected only for its music.
Midnight in the universe of George Clooney must also be satisfied with a single technical nomination, for its visual effects. Even the name of the inescapable Alexandre Desplat, French composer nominated almost every year at the Oscars, was not retained for this edition.
On the French side still, we can regret the absence of Tahar Rahim, among the favorites of this year, with his role in Designated guilty. Note that his partner, Jodie Foster, winner of a Golden Globes in supporting role for this same performance, is not named either. Finally, the outsider Deux, French candidate for the Oscars this year, did not finally work a miracle and will not compete in the category Best foreign film.
On the forgotten side, as at the Golden Globes, let us mention the absence of the multi-named Meryl Streep. Zendaya, awarded at the Emmy Awards for her performance in Euphoria was not selected when she could also have been nominated for Malcolm & Marie by Sam Levinson, a film also shunned by the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
