On TV Sunday December 19: two great classics to (re) see absolutely

Every day, find the program of films and series to watch on TV. This Sunday: the adaptation of an Oscar-winning novel, the essential duo of Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan, and “Ice Age 5”.

SUNDAY FILMS

This Sunday evening, two great classics of cinema: one American, the other French.

In 1965, David Lean adapted the eponymous novel by Russian writer Boris Pasternak: Doctor Zhivago. Renowned for the splendor of its sets and costumes, as well as for the Maurice Jarre soundtrack, the film also confirms Omar Sharif’s international star status and offers Geraldine Chaplin his first film role. Despite some negative reviews that temporarily prompt David Lean to consider ending his career, Doctor Zhivago received numerous distinctions, including five Oscars, and benefited above all from immense commercial success.

Same public success for The Quai des Brumes, released in 1938. Marcel Carné was only 29 years old and had two feature films to his credit when he directed this film and directed Jean Gabin, who was already a big star at the time. He owes this chance to the actor himself, who insisted on filming with the tandem Meat-Prévert and thus facilitated the production despite the darkness of the scenario. The Quai des Brumes has become a classic of French cinema of the interwar period, in the vein of poetic realism, of which we notably remember the scene of the kiss between Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan and the legendary line that sets it off …
