Nine Perfect Strangers, a series created by David E. Kelley and directed by Jonathan Levine.

WHO IS IT WITH?
Needless to introduce Nicole Kidman who continues, after the success of Big Little Lies, its way on the small screen with a slew of series projects. Also producer of Nine Perfect Strangers, the Oscar-winning actress has surrounded herself with a beautiful cast, starting with Melissa McCarthy, well known for her comedic genius.
Together, they give the reply to Michael Shannon (Take Shelter, The Shape of Water), Luke Evans (The beauty and the Beast), Regina Hall (Girls Trip, Scary Movie), Bobby Cannavale (Blue jasmine, Ant-Man), Samara Weaving (Wedding nightmare, Hollywood), Asher Keddie (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Grace Van Patten (Under The Silver Lake) and Manny Jacinto (The Good Place, Top Gun: Maverick).
WELL WORTH A LOOK ?
Fitness centers are popular. After the surprise summer success of The White Lotus, Nine Perfect Strangers comes to give a layer with its gallery of characters in crisis, come to take stock in a paradisiac setting.
While comparison is inevitable, the series worn and produced by Nicole Kidman is somewhat different. Here, clients sign up for therapy to clear their minds and get rid of their old demons. At least that’s what they believe.
In the Tranquillum House, a modern building built in the middle of nowhere, everyone follows Masha’s well-being advice and methods to the letter. All dressed in white, with piercing eyes and a soft voice, but not very reassuring, she takes her role of spiritual guide very seriously, perhaps a little too much.
If the residents are the laboratory rats, she is the scientist, on the lookout for their every move that she observes through surveillance cameras. Nothing very healthy, that’s for sure.
Adapted from the novel by Liane Moriarty, author of Big Little Lies, Nine Perfect Strangers oscillates between thriller and dramatic comedy, often cynical, which is based mainly on the borderline personalities of the residents. Their interactions, always on the line, make it possible to appreciate the dynamics of the actors, often gathered in the same setting, like a play.
The crazy roles, Nicole kidman knows them all too well. Never cautious at the idea of playing extreme characters, she continues here by pushing the cliché of the guru to the end, without ever falling into the grotesque. It is the mystery it contains that keeps the spectators in suspense.
At his side, the duo formed by Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Cannavale manages to infuse the right amount of humor, while Michael Shannon, in the skin of a quinqua a little off the plate, manages to offer a few moments overwhelming.
You have to be patient and wait for the third episode for the plot to take off. Nine Perfect Strangers presents its protagonists at length and takes the risk of losing part of its audience. However, it is by persisting that the series becomes worthy of interest.
