Once again this summer, the platforms are pampering their fans with the release of big productions, mostly derived from flagship franchises such as Marvel, GOT and The Lord of the Rings.
Prey (August 5 on Disney+)
What is it about ? Three centuries ago on the territory of the Comanches, Naru, a fierce and brilliant warrior, now makes it her duty to protect her tribe as soon as danger threatens her. She discovers that the prey she is stalking at the moment is none other than a particularly evolved alien predator equipped with the most sophisticated cutting-edge arsenal. A confrontation as perverse as it is terrifying soon begins between the two adversaries…
What there is to know : Four years after the last installment, the Predator returns to hunt on our screens. This time it’s the director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) which tackles this cult franchise by setting its action in the distant past. According to the confidences of the latter, the studio wanted to hide the appearance of the alien from the fans, so that Prey was not presented at first glance as “a new film in the Predator saga”. The good news is that you don’t need to have seen the previous productions to enjoy it.
Sandman (August 5 on Netflix)
What is it about ? After years of imprisonment, the Dream Lord begins his journey across worlds to find what was stolen from him and reclaim his power.
What there is to know : Although Netflix remains quite discreet about the promotion of Sandmanthis series has something to intrigue us since it is the adaptation of the fantastic graphic novels of neil gaiman, to whom we owe American Gods. We can count on him to offer us a dark show with a particular aesthetic, which the platform has also classified as ““prohibited for those under 18”. On the casting side, the main role was given to the mysterious and disturbing Tom Sturridge, who plays the role of a myriad of rather well-known secondary actors including Boyd Holbrook, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance and David Thewlis.
She-Hulk: Lawyer (August 17 on Disney+)
What is it about ? The adventures of lawyer Jennifer Walters, cousin of Bruce Banner, who inherits her powers and becomes Miss Hulk (She-Hulk in VO) following a blood transfusion intended to save her after she was shot above.
What there is to know : It’s almost time to meet Hulk’s cousin! And it’s the awesome Tatiana Maslany who lends her features to this new superheroine with a strong character. If the first trailer was coldly received by fans, because of its digital effects, the platform has since made some adjustments and promised some nice surprises. Besides Bruce Banner, she hulk should indeed welcome prestigious guests including a certain Matt Murdock… A return to the small screen for Daredevil and charlie cox after an appearance in Spider-Man 3 last December. In short, a must-have this summer for Marvel fans.
House of the Dragon (August 22 on OCS)
What is it about ? Three hundred years before the events of Game Of Thones, a look back at the origins of House Targaryen… Based on the novel “Fire & Blood” by George RR Martin.
What there is to know : HBO is not done with it Game Of Thrones, and it is through a prequel that fans are invited to return to Westeros. The series worn in particular by Emma d’Arcy and Matt Smith will have to do as well or even better, knowing that the bar is already quite high. But always the same question in the line of fire: who will accede to the Iron Throne among the Targaryens? Adapted from the novel “Fire & Blood” by George RR Martin, House of the Dragon has already been renewed for a second season.
The Rings of Power (September 2 on Prime Video)
What is it about ? Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the dreaded re-emergence of evil in Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elven capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the far reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that will last long after that they are gone.
What there is to know : We will have to wait for the start of the school year to be able to discover the biggest streaming release of the year. The Rings of Powerthe name given to the series derived from The Lord of the Rings, is awaited at the turn by fans of Tolkien, generating a huge online discussion on the subject. And if certain screenplay (and casting…) choices may have annoyed a small part of the community, the platform has been able to effectively teaser the series over the months. She also seems to strongly believe in it since she would have already ordered 5 seasons and spent crazy sums: 250 million dollars for the rights and a budget of 1 billion dollars for about fifty episodes… The more would have been allocated to sets and costumes.
