Nothing like a good music series to forget the stress and anxiety that comes with confinement. For this, AlloCiné has selected 5 for you to watch on Netflix. And there is something for all tastes and all ages!
In 2008, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, three music enthusiasts, began to imagine a series around a losers choir in a high school. As soon as it launched on FOX the following year, Glee was a success. Spectators befriended his stereotypical but engaging characters. The musical series stands out because it deals with strong subjects (such as pregnancy, harassment at school or even self-acceptance) by finding a happy medium between drama and comedy. Glee is an ode to losers and those who cannot find their place. But if we like this series, it is also for these musical numbers and its covers of the biggest titles. Journey’s Don’t stop believing has become his anthem! Glee also exposed some talents, which we now see in other series like Lea Michele, Darren Criss and Melissa Benoist.
“I was very inspired by the idea that when you think of a song and sing it in your head, it’s the artist you hear, not your own voice.“Josh Safran, the creator of the Soundtrack series, started from this premise. This romantic and musical drama in 10 episodes follows the stories of the heart that connect the members of a group of people from all walks of life in Los Angeles. through the prism of music. The showrunner made the audacious choice of playback to stand out: the actors therefore mimic the songs and are not the performers (unlike Glee for example). Soundtrack wants to be eclectic: there are Bill Withers, Bruno Mars, Demi Lovato and even Joni Mitchell. We find in the casting of the series some familiar faces like Madeleine Stowe (Revenge), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Blindspot) or Jenna Dewan (Sexy Dance).
Dolly Parton’s Heartstring (2019)
Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings is an anthology series which recalls the greatest successes of the American singer and evokes her sources of inspiration through anecdotes and memories. Eight episodes, for eight stories, through 8 country songs. We find there some well-known actors of the small screen like Colin O’Donoghue and Ginnifer Goodwin from Once Upon A Time, Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest), Katie Stevens (The Bold Type) or Bellamy Young (Scandal). From “Jolene” to “Two Doors Downs”, Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings will make you want to put on a pair of cowboy boots and hit the track to wiggle!
45 rpm (2018 -)
After country, make way for rock! This Spanish series in 10 episodes (which reminds us of Vinyl by Scorsese) takes place in the 60s, at a time when this new musical genre stirred youth, and tells us the story of his first idol played by Carlos Cuevas and that of the legendary Futura label. The series includes many titles of the time but allows itself some deviations by also drawing from Lady Gaga, REM and Maroon 5. 45 RPM is nonetheless an electrifying series that will make you forget the gloom of confinement and give you Energy !
The Magic of Motown (2018)
From 6 years old
The little ones also have the right to their musical series! For this there is La Magie de Motown, which as its name suggests, takes up the biggest titles popularized by this label of the 60s, with the character of Ben, a young boy who gives life to the colorful drawings of street art and thus transforms his city. The opportunity to introduce his children to some cult titles (Superstition, I heard it through the Grapevine, My Guy, Higher Ground etc …). Motown’s Magic was created by Josh Wakely, to whom we also owe Beat Bugs, another children’s musical series featuring the greatest Beatles songs!
