Pieces of a woman (January 7)

What is it about ? Living in Boston, Martha and Sean Carson are preparing to become parents. But the couple’s life is turned upside down when the young woman gives birth at home and loses her baby, despite the assistance of a midwife, soon prosecuted for negligence. Martha must then learn to grieve, while undergoing an intrusive mother and an increasingly irritable husband. But he must also attend the trial of the midwife, whose reputation is now destroyed.

What there is to know : Produced by Martin Scorsese, Pieces of a Woman is presented as an intimate and heartbreaking chronicle of the life of a couple, and the moving portrait of a woman who must learn to mourn. Vanessa Kirby, revealed in The Crown where she lent her features to Princess Margaret, offers here a performance full of sensitivity, rewarded at the Venice Film Festival by the Volpi Cup for the best female interpretation. She gives the reply to Shia Labeouf and Ellen Burstyn. One scene in particular should not leave the spectators indifferent, that of childbirth, which lasts about thirty minutes. Kirby also assisted and accompanied midwives to prepare themselves as well as possible.

The White Tiger (January 22)

What is it about ? Balram Halwai recounts with dark humor his meteoric rise from penniless villager to successful entrepreneur in modern India. Cunning and ambitious, our young hero manages to become the driver of Ashok and Pinky, who have just returned from America. The company having trained him for a single function – that of serving – Balram made himself indispensable in the eyes of his rich masters. But after a night of betrayal, he understands how far they are willing to go to trap and protect themselves. As he is on the verge of losing everything, Balram rebels against a rigged and unequal system to become a master of a new kind.

What there is to know : After Fahrenheit 451 and 99 homes, director Ramin Bahrani returns with his new feature film. He adapts with Le Tigre Blanc (The White Tiger in VO) the New York Times bestselling novel and 2008 Booker Prize winner, written by Aravind Adiga. A film that offers us a dive into today’s India, still in the grip of class struggle, and a social satire that hits the mark. The cast, made up entirely of Indian actors, includes Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico) – also starring in another Netflix film called It’s Us Heroes.

Penguin Bloom (January 27)

What is it about ? Penguin Bloom tells the true story of Sam Bloom, a young mother whose world is turned upside down after a near-fatal accident renders her unable to walk.

What there is to know : Naomi Watts stars in heartbreaking drama adapted from novel Penguin Bloom (The Amazing Tale of the Little Bird Who Saved a Family) written by Bradley Trevor Greive. Its adaptation was particularly awaited by fans of the book, acclaimed by critics for its strength and optimism. After a visit to the Toronto Festival last September where it moved viewers, the feature film jumps out of the cinema in France to land directly on Netflix.

The Dig (January 29)

What is it about ? A wealthy widow hires an amateur archaeologist to unearth a burial on her property. They then discover an ancient Saxon funeral vessel and its treasure that could turn human history upside down. Together, they must stand together in front of the British Museum, which intends to seize the vessel by claiming to have discovered it …

What there is to know : Who has never dreamed of being an archaeologist? The Dig strikes a chord with this story adapted from the eponymous novel by John Preston. The latter was inspired by Sutton Hoo, an archaeological site found in 1939 that hid remains from medieval times, including a huge boat. Their findings were at the heart of a battle with the British Museum. Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James are among the cast.

Malcolm & Marie (February 5)

What is it about ? After the preview screening of his latest film, a filmmaker returns home with his girlfriend. While it is certain that his film will meet with critical and commercial success, the evening takes an unexpected turn: the two lovers must face certain truths about their relationship that put the strength of their feelings to the test …

What there is to know : Two months after Mank, Netflix subscribers will be able to discover a new black and white film. This time it is Sam Levinson (Euphoria) who tries his hand at exercising with Malcom & Marie, an intimate behind-the-scenes drama that brings together John David Washington and Zendaya for the first time on screen. This feature film has the particularity of having been entirely shot during confinement in the United States. The director managed to get the agreement of the federation and different organizations, surrounding himself with a more than small team. Result: Malcolm & Marie can only be played in one location.
